Oedipus Rex , a classic example of irony in a play. The way Sophocles wrote the story it was meant to be a tragedy. The main character (as defined) is supposed to come to some revealation about himself and his faults . His fault that would cost him everything .All the things that make a tragedy are of course present in the play but it has a twist ....

Though Oedipus could physically see he couldnt "see" the truth and when he was blind he "saw" the truth that he had fullfilled the prophecy . The irony behind his proclamation in the begining of the play is that as he said the words to whom he thought could be the killer he actually said it to himself , exiling himself and doomi.... |
