.... a roller coaster of emotions from chapter to chapter is remarkable. The basic feeling of hope and despair take turns throughout the novel but the idea that life is a futile attempt at salvation is stressed at all times. The emotional seesaw that Hemingway puts the reader through is an invigorating experience but even more stimulating since he can maintain the overtones of depression. Hemingway’s ability to pull so many tragedies together to stress the themes of depression, despair, a futility in humanity also make this novel very impressive. He then influenced Webber to testify and say that he saw the man offer the bribe, which he didn’t see. Many times it is shown that officers avoid crime because there is too much paperwork to go with it. While Webber and Borland were on duty, the saw a moving car collide with a parked car, and Webber was told to do a U-turn. This was because if they caught the guy that did it, they would have to do several hours of paperwork. It was a good book but some times took a few cycles of reading through to get the part you were looking for. The role of men and women of the sixteenth century are defined in this book, a few of these examples are. On page nineteen were a man refers to the way that married and unmarried girls should not stroll by the river or ride up the hill in a carriage, but how they should stay home and raise the children. The way objects can constantly build up dust time after time no matter what environment its in resembles her. Eveline is constantly being involved in problems and stress time after time.
