The pearl buyers were very conniving characters when they all tried to buy the pearl for much less than it is worth so they could sell it for a big profit. Kino now realized that this pearl was becoming a problem but he didn't care. His motives revovled around greed which was shown throughout the story. Kino encounters many other obstacles in his journey to sell the pearl such as theieves and his wife. On page 93 Piggy expresses his fears by telling Ralph, “ I'm scared of him and that is why I know him. If your scared of someone you hate him but you can't stop thinking about him.� In this it is obvious that Piggy is scared of Jack, so much so that he thinks about him constantly and now he has him figured out. For Daisy, it lies in material wealth, and in the comfort and security associated with it. Daisy seems to be easily impressed by material success, as when she is touring Gatsby's mansion and seems deeply moved by his collection of fine, tailored shirts. It would seem that Tom's relative wealth, also, had at one time impressed her enough to win her in marriage. What was most important to him was to make a stand against the insanity of the town, for himself and for God, and using that as a last resort to make people aware of what was happening. Arthur Miller wrote his play, The Crucible, a story about the Salem witch trials, and the panic resulting from it, as an allegory to show people the insanity of the McCarth .....

The easiest way to observe this may be the town's actions toward Tom Robinson, the "negro" on trial. The townspeople, for the most part, dismissed the entire trial on the basis on that it does not matter what Atticus can do, Mr. Robinson is automatically guilty. This message can also be seen in a severely symbolic manner, Tom Robinson's death. The manner in which he dies is that he escapes and attempts to climb the fence to freedom, however he only has one good arm and that is his detriment.
