.... got into the second chapter. I didn't want to put the book down. I sometimes have trouble trying to find a book that's actually interesting, but I didn't have any trouble with this book. I got through the whole book fast, I was always reading it in study hall, and trying to get as far as I could in readers workshop. It was easy to understand. I've read a lot of science fiction books that are very complicated. Some books have too many characters to remember, or they have something that is really weird or unrealistic. Another misperception that Scout has is about Mrs. Dubose. She always thought of her as a mean old lady who had nothing better to do than to yell at children. But, they soon found out that she was in withdrawal for a very serious addiction which was why she was so angry all the time. "Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict. She took it as a painkiller for years"(Lee 111). After she dies Scout starts to grasp the fact that Mrs. Dubose had a very hard time being happy. Alike many other .....

.... war progresses. Remarque accurately portrays all aspects of the war. However Remarque is best able to portray the effects the war has on the soldiers and the rest of the people and the scene of the battlefield compared to home. The war scarred the soldiers permanently, if not physically then mentally. After the war the soldiers usually never recovered from the war. Two of the most common side affects of the war were shell shock and stir crazy. When suffering from shell shock a soldier’s brain doesn’t function properly and the man is a “vegetable�. This means the man is alive but he can’t do anything because he is in a state .....

.... from the outside he describes what he is seeing and how he feels as he looks upon the house, “the vacant eye-like windows…upon a few rank sedges—and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees—with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium” (718). This statement contributes to the collective atmosphere of despair and anguish, the narrator tries to view everything he sees in a rational manner, but upon looking at the house and its surroundings, he seems to have a heightened sense of unreality, as if he is hallucinat .....

.... where even the street on which Miss Emily lived, that had once been the most select, had now been encroached and obliterated, her house an eyesore among eyesores. Both the town and Miss Emily herself, now looked upon Miss Emily as the only remnant of that greater time. This fact gives the reader an understanding of the mindset of the “town,� who is narrating Miss Emily's story to us in a form resembling a gossip circle, where stories of various townspeople are pieced together and of Miss Emily, the protagonist who lived alone except for her lone servant. The actions of Miss Emily range from eccentric to absurd but it is the readers .....

These crimes consist of: Murder, armed robbery, burglary, larceny, rape, and assaults on the police. The next called category is called " Summery " crimes which is equal to our misdemeanor crimes. Summery crimes were all minor crimes such as: Property crimes, Vagrancy, Drunkenness, Prostitution, Minor Larceny , and all other minor offenses. Probably the most famous criminal in the Victorian period was " Jack the Ripper ". Jack the Ripper was " the first modern sexual serial killer" ( Sugden, pg.2) Jack .....

.... describes Macbeth in action “Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, / Which smoked with bloody execution.” (I,ii,17-18) This line connects Macbeth with killing, and hints at the future. The evil deed of murdering the king becomes too much of a burden on the Macbeths. The blood represents their crime, and they can not escape the sin of their actions. Macbeth realizes that in time he would get what he deserves. Since he can not ride himself of his guilt by washing the blood away, his fate may have been sealed. They try to use water for vindication, but Macbeth says that all the water in the ocean could not cleanse hi .....

.... and educated women. The contrast in the two comes from the different motives each has to separate themselves from the norm. Sue is self-centered in her “independence,� while Dorthea is an ardent spokeswoman for social reform and justice. Both women follow different paths, neither ending up at a position they once knew they would attain. Dorthea is depicted early in the novel as having an intimidating presence; however, at a dinner with the supposedly learned and intelligent Mr. Casaubon, she feels quite uneasy. He is an older man with an unattractive appearance which goes completely unnoticed to the “lovestruck� Dorthea. Her si .....

.... path. Tayo became so entranced with the idea that the Japanese were like him that he started to put people he knew at home's faces on the Japanese soldiers. Tayo could not see the reason for killing the Japanese, and then when the soldier killed Rocky, it made his path split like a silk string to a spider's web, it went out in all directions. His mind snapped at that exact moment and went into "shell-shock". Tayo started very early trying to find his path, but yet his path paralleled Rocky's until the time when Rocky died. Tayo's path paralleled but was always a step behind, because he was trying to retain his heritage and still keep with .....

Through lack of attention, the house has advanced from a beautiful representative of quality to an ugly holdover from another era. Similarly, Miss Emily has become an “eyesore� for instance; she is described as a “fallen monument�(Faulkner 204) symbolizing her former beauty and later ugliness. Like the house, she has fallen from grace.
