.... Tess's divergent and varying feelings. The first images Hardy uses with Tess are those that portray a sense of innocence and purity. By saying, "every girl carried in her left (hand) a bunch of white flowers. . . their hair reflected in the sunshine every tone of gold. . . each had a private little sun for her soul," (24) Hardy is able to immediately present Tess as a naive, and untouched girl, even though he does not specifically mention her in this quotation. The image of white flowers provides a feeling of cleanliness and purity, which corresponds to the way Hardy has chosen to initially depict Tess. The sunshine and golden colo .....

.... Sydney Carton are representing Darnay in this trial. Sydney Carton saves Darnay from death in this trial with his miraculous wits. Through this Darnay is given another chance at life ,and therefore was "recalled to life." The last and most significant instance of someone being "recalled to life" is found in the last chapters of this book. Sydney Carton has recently switched places with his look alike, Darnay, and is awaiting the guillotine. While Sydney awaits his death he thinks, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, then I have ever done, it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." Not long after Goodman Brown’s journey down the wooded path, but he comes upon the figure of a man. This is Hawthorn’s opening stage for Goodman Brown’s disillusionment, which turns out to be the beginning of the end for Young Goodman. The man along the path is clearly seen as evil because of the detailed description of his devilish appearance and the nature of this late-night rendezvous. The ironic fact about the relationship between the two knights and Emily is that Emily does not wish to marry either of the knights. she expresses this in a prayer to Diana, the goddess of chaste, " Well you know that I desire to be a maiden all my life; I never want to be either a beloved or a wife."
