It is no wonder that the three American explorers--Terry, Jeff and Van --who stumble on Herland are shocked and confused. Before they arrive, they joke about the mythical land, assuming that there must be men it, since women could not possibly cooperate well enough, or be competent enough, to run a country. When they see how successfully Herland is run, only one of them, Van, praises its all female population as a group of exemplary human beings whose behavior all persons, male as well .....

.... a strong theocracy. The moral standards of the people were very high. A fear of the unknown hung over the population. The setting of helps add to the conflict and sets up a fertile environment for associated guilt (Weales 58). Examples of associated guilt as presented in are the hangings and convictions of nineteen men and women and two dogs in Salem in 1692. Their bodies were buried in shallow graves or not at all. The trial of these people are perhaps the most disconcerting single episode in American history. The trials were started when several girls accused members of the community of witchcraft. .... for the Chicago Cubs. Roy is extremely attracted to her, but a major league ballplayer on the train named Whammer Wambold has already caught her eye. Roy becomes jealous and begins to do things to try to get her attention. At a stop in the route, the passengers get off for a break and go to a local carnival where Roy and the big leaguer clash in a contest of talent, a David-and-Goliath-type confrontation (Solotaroff 9). Roy strikes out the batter with three blistering pitches, each of which make Harriet pay more and more attention to him. As they arrive in Chicago, Harriet stays at the hotel at which Roy has booked a room. She gives .....

His leadership skills also shine in the jury room as well. He controls and leads every discussion, speaking order, voting, and demonstration. Vance takes on the leading role and handles it well. He also brings organization into the jury room by organizing the juries, the discussions, and the votes. With the excellent traits that Vance brings into the jury room, he allows the trial to run smoothly and effectively. Dorian Harwood’s profession as nurse also shapes his actions in the jur .....

.... role in this story is also one of the most powerful scenes in the entire book. It occurs when Mr. Lockwood has determined that he must stay the night at Wuthering Heights, his landlord’s estate. Heathcliff’s servant, Zillah, shows Mr. Lockwood to his room and cautions him to “hide his candle and not make a noise” since Heathcliff would not willingly approve of his staying in that room. Just after Mr. Lockwood enters the room, he discovers three names carved over and over onto the ledge near the window, Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Heathcliff, and Catherine Linton. Mr. Lockwood begins paging through and examining .....

.... reason he says it is uninteresting is because the two main characters, Joe and Warren (which are hard to determine between), are vague and hard to understand. Harris claims that Doctorow's complete abandonment of punctuation and the formal sentance in this book are reminiscent of Thomas Pynchon, but it seems as if he is trying desperately, (and badly) to search for his own style, a way to test his own limits as an author. While the language and flow of the book is hard to grasp in the beginning, it soon becomes somewhat more clear to the reader and seems to move the pace of the book along faster than it did before. .... for hours upon hours at a time. If one has ever been a grocery store clerk, then one has reckoned with, or attempted to reckon with, the strangling blandness and repetition of the job. Also, this A&P lies in a very formal, conservative town, five miles off the beach. Despite this closeness to the beach, some people in the town "haven't seen the ocean for twenty years" (482). This town, and this A&P, like the people in it, are boring and stagnant. The characters in this A&P are the most persuasive external factor in Sammy's internal conflict. The hero in "Fences," a "flawed giant" is a garbageman of fifty-six named Troy Maxson. Once a professional baseball player, he was unable to play in the major leagues because of his African-American roots. There is no aspect of his life in which he does not feel constricted or fenced in. Because he is black, he is not allowed to drive the garbage truck but must always work behind, lifting and dumping. They ended up diving right down to the steel boxes that contained the "White Sharks". The men were curious and so they opened the box. Nothing happened at first and then glowing eyes caught their attention. One guy was killed. The other guy managed to get away and swim for about 200 yards and then he was down. The men's bodies washed up on shored weeks later. That's when Chase and Tall Man knew there was something in the water and it was up to them to figure out what it was. More strange things were happening. .....

.... A Girl of the Streets. After her little brother's death near the beginning of the story, Maggie exists as the sole example of innocence in the Bowery. Her parents drunken rages and constant fighting are tragic representations of the horrors of experience. Her brother Jimmie is the epitome of experience, driving his horses through the city and trampling any innocence upon which they come. He cannot understand how Maggie could possibly remain innocent surrounded by the filth of his world. Maggie seeks only escape from the Bowery but doesn't wish to become as her family. She latches onto Pete as a symbol of maturity and success .....
