Words: 2185 - Pages: 8.... It is also my belief that this treatment of ideology in “Dry September” extends around the reader, making the reader aware of his or her own ideological responses to the story.
The Ideology
This first section of the paper will serve as an introduction to an ideological reading of the text. I have chosen secondary sources that represent an ascending scale of critical emphasis on ideology in “Dry September.”
Paul Rogalus, in an article to the Explicator, states clearly that “Minnie Cooper…has accused a black man, Will Mayes, of having attacked her…”(Rogalus 211) Rogalus goes on to examine the scene in the theatre as a .....

their immediate clientele, their counterparts, and the rest of society. In the
broadest terms, the book examines the special problems that Negro policemen face
in their efforts to reconcile their race with their work in the present
framework of American values and beliefs.
The research for the study was based on intensive interviews collected
over a period of eleven months, from December 1964 to October 1965. During that
time the author talked with Negro police engaged in different types of police
specialties, and men of different rank and backgrounds .....

The gradual movement in the story stresses the woman’s tenacity and incredible effort towards an intent she sees fit for such a journey.

Phoolan Devi: Perceptions Of Power
Words: 978 - Pages: 4.... by the second
party ceasing to accept it, and that the power of one individual over another
may sometimes be physically or otherwise inescapable. Often, the belief follows
the direct experience of power, but regardless of the order in which it is
conceptualized, I feel the nature of power is inextricably founded in belief and
perception.
One of the most striking characteristics of Phoolan Devi is her refusal to
accept her power-deficient positions in her relationships. From the time that
she was a child, she seems to have refused to conform to her society's
hierarchical indexing. She resisted attempts to categorize and fix her in .....

Lord Of The Flies: Golding Reduces The Power Of His Message
Words: 401 - Pages: 2.... to show this darkness which lurked beneath the surface.
Golding also uses the dead pilot conveniently against the boys - the way in which he is caught in the trees just in the right position to be caught by the wind and look like the beast and the way the wind picks up after Simon has let him down from the trees and carries him out to sea, so that the other boys cannot see that it wasn't a beast. The author uses the boy's fear against them, and although this could possibly happen in the situation, Golding uses it as a weapon against them, their morale and their companionship. I think that the boys split up and go to Jack because of the fear .....

An Interpretation Of William Faulkner’s “Dry September”
Words: 1166 - Pages: 5.... in the shocking racial discrepancies of a “dusty” Southern town.
Faulkner sets the mood in the first paragraph of his story, with strong descriptions of the seemingly endless dry summer days of the South. He stages the characters with distinctive language patterns, and the repetitive use of the slang term for a colored person, is used much to frequently. The town is demonstrated to the reader as a closely knit community with no strangers.
As the rumor becomes clear, it is the men in the Barber shop that bring it to the reader’s attention. Miss Minnie Cooper and Will Mayes, a Negro. Or so it was stated in disbelief, of the well r .....
