In Bradbury's novel, we see how it can happen the other way around. As in Wells' work, here, too, the Martians are killed by Earth's bacteria -- but rather than a case of victory in a war, this is a sad disaster. The desease wiped out a beautiful, wise, and ancient civilization. The book depicts humankind as mostly violent in nature. Its unique style is different from the contemporary thought and therefor open for criticism. The struggle between darkness and light is a major theme in all the works of William Golding. Although the book starts with a variety of characters, who take part in different activities that enrich their community, it shows a pattern of slowly diminishing individuality among them. This trend become more apparent as the book progresses, and eventually fosters situations that can be characterized as simply farce.
