Crime And Punishment--is Rasko
Words: 781 - Pages: 3.... murder Alyona when he recalled a conversation that took place between two ordinary men in a bar. One declared:
I could kill that damned old woman and make off with her money without the faintest conscious-prick.... For one life, thousands would be saved from corruption and decay.... Besides, what value has the life of that sickly, stupid, ill-natured old woman in the balance of existence? (63)
Raskolnikov reasoned that it would be honorable to kill Alyona since it would supposedly benefit humanity, but the fact that “ordinary” men had the same idea should have immediately put a stop to any thoughts that he was extraordinary. .....

Catcher In The Rye - Holden An
Words: 1276 - Pages: 5.... talks about or to each gives you some idea of whether he thinks they are "phony" or normal. A few of his accounts make it more obvious than others to discover how he classifies each family member.
From the very first page of the novel, Holden begins to refer to his parents as distant and generalizes both his father and mother frequently throughout his chronicle. One example is: "…my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything personal about them. They’re quite touchy about anything like that, especially my father. They’re nice and all – I’m not saying that – but they’re also touchy as hell" (Salinger 1) .....

Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave
Words: 530 - Pages: 2.... with Merlin. "He taught me practical things, too; how to gather herbs and dry them to keep, how to use them for medicines, . . . poisons. He made me study the beasts and birds, . . . and-with the dead deer-I learnt about the organs and bones of the body. . . The map Galapas showed me was a copy from a book by Ptolemy of Alexandria." (The Crystal Cave, Pgs. 59-60) Galapas also helps Merlin to put the meanings of his periodic visions of the future and of events far away into action. "'Go? But if I go back, they'll kill me, or shut me up. . . Won't they?'. . . 'You can no more be hidden now, than your merlin could go back into its egg." .....

Big Two-Hearted River
Words: 1185 - Pages: 5.... With the exception of
"My Old Man", which is entirely in the first person , and "On
the Quai at Smyrna", which is only possibly in the first
person, there is just one instance in In Our Time in which a
character speaks in the first person. It occurs in "Big
Two-Hearted River: Part II", an intensely personal story
which completely immerses the reader in the actions and
thoughts of Nick Adams. Hemingway's utilization of the
omniscient third person narrator allows the reader to
visualize all of Nick's actions and surroundings, which would
have been much more difficult to accomplish using first
person narration. Nick is seen setting up h .....

Human Nature: Exposed
Words: 1420 - Pages: 6.... all performed by none other than
man himself. Looking deeper into the symbolistic meaning of many of these
passages reveals that man, in essence , is cruel, silly, and hypocritical in
nature.
Through his writing, it becomes apparent that Twain supports the
thematic idea of the human race being hypocritical. For instance, take the
scene in Chapter 20 where a group of people in Arkansas are listening to the
sermon of a preacher. In this descriptive passage, it can be inferred through
Twain's writing that the average person of this time was in fact "blinded" by
religious influences. The significance of this event can be observed later on .....
