The opening scene is that of a frightfully mutilated workman being brought into a medical clinic by military officers. The author continually gives clues, such as obvious lies by the officers about how the man's injuries occurred, that this is not a typical attack. Soon after this incident another mysterious attack occurs. This time a young girl is bitten by an 'unknown' lizard on a Costa Rican beach along with many other infant deaths in the surrounding area. Either they can be perceived as just upholding the law -she committed a crime, they enforce the law. On the other hand are they going to extreme measures such as wanting to take Pearl, Hester's daughter, away just because Hester has deviated from the norm, all to enforce an unjust law that does not even apply to this situation? She also has an extensive habit of knitting, which will become a significant theme in the novel. Madame Defarge spends most of her days, weeks, and years before the revolution sitting in her wine shop, knitting a list of names. This list of names is a register of those she's marked for death, come the revolution. This hobby links her closely with the reoccurring theme of fate, while all she knits is death into her list. At the Smithsonian Museum of American History, there is an exhibit of items that were left at the wall by someone who loved one of those names. A few examples of these items, are numerous wedding rings, letters, foods, a royal flush of playing cards, pictures, a six pack of beer, a bottle of whiskey, thousands of flowers, many brass arm bands which were worn by soldiers, and medals of honor.
