The story opens with Dorcas’s funeral, where Violet had tried to slash the poor dead girl’s face, now the town reffered to her as “Violent”. Joe had killed the girl because she had tried to leave him. From that point on the story became a struggle of suffering and survival after the deception of “jazz”. Jazz symbolized the music that bloomed along with the Harlem Reniassance between the years of 1920 and 1930. Like the harlem Reniassance, it claimed to offer a better life foe southerners .....

And if the relics didn't seem to work, it was obviously because of the sinful man or woman who purchased them, and no fault of the Pardoner. Her descriptions of his haste purchase of his Island paradise shows a man for whom their is no boundaries. His arrogance is further displayed in his building of his compound. Spellman's voice of reason comes from a spiritual Mexican couple who are Thoros's servants. They not only warn but predict of many consequences to the ignorance to which nature is being shown. “Nature will not permit alteration on such a scale.�(Emilio, 114). However, these warnings are ignored by the men who do not appreciate a biza .....

.... arthur would have risked anything to help other people, and ended up doing just that. James finds that his son was well researched on the problems of their society, and was interested in helping the development of the social structure in south africa. From the pictures of jesus and lincoln on his wall, james discovered the admiration arthur had for these two men. These were men of action, who showed love for their friends, and at the same time, their enemies. These two men suffered and died for their beliefs, as did arthur in a way, this is showing arthurs' father what a great man his son was by comparison, and similarity to others. This re .....

I loved this scene because it showed that Sydney Carton had finally found someone who could love him, as he could love them, but it saddened me that he had found her just before their deaths. Another scene I particularly enjoyed was the scene in which a large cask of wine had dropped and broken in the street. Because many people had very little to eat or drink, a large crowd gathered around the dirty puddle and began drinking what they could of the spilled wine. This scene was very descriptive, explaining how the people tried to scoop up the wine in their hands, and how they soaked it up .....

The image of a "pitchy cloud / Of locusts" to describe them as they rise from the burning lake is especially apt, given the destructive nature of, and biblical references to these insects. Milton states that they lost their original names after the Fall ("Got them new names, till wand'ring o'er the earth") and that they .....

Because of the want to fit in, Jeanne accepted white culture's beliefs in terms of school and gender as the way to model her life because it is made fitting in easier. Jeanne seems to have set up her own type of Jim Crow rules, like those in the South. She always had to be complaisant around White people and apologize or be submissive to them even if they were in the wrong. This was not anything that was enforced by law, like in the South, but it was self-enforce .....
