Yet in this case, the plot develops to the point where their dream seems more attainable with Candy’s involvement. But here lies the tragedy of this classic novel. Their dream turned into a cliché of a line in Robert Burns’ poem where he writes that “the best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley.� Their dream seemed it would become a success until a tragic event brought failure.
