A Long Way From Univac
Words: 1474 - Pages: 6.... Machines Company
introduced the first IBM PC. Unlike Apple, IBM used a policy of open
architecture for their computer. They bought all of their components from the
lowest bidder, such as the 8086 and 8088 microprocessor chips, made by a Intel,
a Hillsboro, Oregon company. When IBM¹s computer¹s design had been finalized,
they shared most of the inner workings of the computer with everyone. IBM hoped
that this would encourage companies to manufacture computers that were
compatible with theirs, and that in turn, would cause software companies to
create operating systems, or OS, and other programs for the ³IBM Compatible²
line of comp .....

Economic Consequences Of Software Crime
Words: 3879 - Pages: 15.... manuals. It is illegal for a corporation or
business to purchase a single set of original s!
oftware and then load that software onto more than one computer, or lend,
copy or distribute software for any reason without the prior written
consent of the software manufacturer. Many software managers are
concerned with the legal compliance, along with asset management and costs
to their organizations. Many firms involve their legal departments and
human resources in regards to software distribution and licensing.
Information can qualify to be property in two ways; patent law and
copyright laws which are creations of federal statutes, whi .....

The Modem
Words: 474 - Pages: 2.... baud than 1200 and so on. The fastest modem made
today is a 56k which is very fast. Not as fast as ISDN (The Wave offered through
Rogers cable) or even as advanced as Satellite modem. Most people now have 14.4
or 28.8 baud modems (Baud is "Slang" for Baud Rate Per Second) the reason for
the increase in 14.4 and 28.8's is that they are cheap and fairly recent and
haven't gone out of date yet. There are two types of modem external and
external modems internal plugs into a 16 bit port inside your computer and
external connects through either a serial (mouse)port or a parallel
(printer)port most people like the external modems because they d .....

(d) Interruption of computer services. A person is guilty of the computer
crime of interruption of computer services when he, without authorization,
intentionally or recklessly disrupts or degrades or causes the disruption or
degradation of computer services or denies or causes the denial of computer
services to an authorized user of a computer system.
(e) Misuse of computer system information. A person is guilty of the computer
crime of misuse of computer system information when: (1) As a result of his
accessing or causing to be accessed a computer system, he intentionally makes or

Organic Molecules Challenge
Words: 2520 - Pages: 10.... go before carbon-based electronics replace silicon-based
electronics, but we can see now that we hope to revolutionize computer design
and performance," said Robert R. Birge, a professor of chemistry, Carnegie-
Mellon University, Pittsburgh. "Now it's only a matter of time, hard work, and
some luck before molecular electronics start having a noticeable impact."
Molecular electronics is so named because it uses molecules to act as the
"wires" and "switches" of computer chips. Wires, may someday be replaced by
polymers that conduct electricity, such as polyacetylene and
polyphenylenesulfide. Another candidate might be organometallic compoun .....

Software Piracy: A Big Crime With Big Consequences
Words: 2190 - Pages: 8.... in software piracy.
The first is facilitation. Facilitation is the deliberate copying of copyrighted
software and distributing it. An example would be an MIT student named David
LaMacchia. This individual served and maintained a computer that was connected
to the internet that offered it's users more than one million dollars worth of
software 'free of charge.' Mr. LaMacchia was caught by the authorities and was
acquitted of this piracy due to the lack of legal standards for this crime.
Another example is off local bulletin board systems. Many are run out of the
offenders homes with just a phone line, a computer and a modem. Here memb .....

Computer Crime
Words: 1318 - Pages: 5.... have learned where the money is. Instead of settling
for a few thousand dollars in a bank robbery, those with enough computer
knowledge can walk away from a computer crime with many millions. The National
Computer Crimes Squad estimates that between 85 and 97 percent of computer
crimes are not even detected. Fewer than 10 percent of all computer crimes are
reported this is mainly because organizations fear that their employees, clients,
and stockholders will lose faith in them if they admit that their computers have
been attacked. And few of the crimes that are reported are ever solved.
Hacking was once a term that was used to describe .....

Computer Programming
Words: 880 - Pages: 4.... step into a
logical series of hours of writing programs, the programmer must follow. After
long hours of writing programs, the programmer must thoroughly testing and
revising it. Generally, programmers create software by using the following a
basic step-by-step development process:
(1) Define the scope of the program by outlining exactly what the program
will do.
(2) Plan the sequence of computer operations, usually by developing a
flowchart (a diagram showing the order of computer actions and
data flow).
(3) Write the code--the program instructions encoded in a particular
programming lan .....

Year 2000 Fiction, Fantasy, And Fact
Words: 682 - Pages: 3.... that 60 to 80 million home and small business users doing math or
accounting etc. on Windows 3.1 or older software, are just as susceptible to
this "bug." Can this be repaired in time? For some, it is already too late. A
system that is devised to cut an annual federal deficit to 0 by the year 2002 is
already in "hot water." Data will become erroneous as the numbers "just don't
add up" anymore. Some PC owners can upgrade their computer's BIOS (or complete
operating system) and upgrade the OS (operating system) to Windows 95, this
will set them up for another 99 years. Older software however, may very well
have to be replaced or at t .....

Computer History
Words: 182 - Pages: 1.... Gottfried Von Lebniz invented a calculating machine that could add and multiply.
In 1812, computer developments had risen in Cambridge, England. Charles Babbage wanted to develop a machine that would operate the long computations to be able to operate automatically. He then devised an automatic calculating machine, which he named a "difference engine". By 1822, he had constructed a small working model for demonstrations. In 1823, he started construction of a full-scale "difference engine". It was designed to be steam powered, fully automatic and was to be comanded by a fixed instruction programer.
Babbaged worked on the "full-scale differenc .....
