Silas Marner
Words: 787 - Pages: 3.... taken by this wolf in sheep’s clothing. This type of betrayal makes a person hate humanity especially in such a close knit community. Silas moved himself to the fringes of
civilization. He cared for no one and wanted no to care for him.
Both of their attitudes changed when Eppie arrived. Godfrey knew that he could marry Nancy now beacuse his old wife had died. This also showed how shallow he was. Godfrey thought he could throw money at Silas and he would be very compliant to give Eppie back to her ‘rightful’ father. Yet at the final moments of ths confrontation Eppie’s arrival unleashed a side of Silas not seen for fifteen yea .....

The Allegory Of The Cave
Words: 687 - Pages: 3.... the only thing that exists are these shadows.
"The Allegory..." symbolizes man's struggle to reach understanding and enlightenment. First of all, Plato believed that one could only learn through dialectic reasoning and open-mindedness. Humans had to travel from where there are images and objects of sense to the lucid or invisible realm of reasoning and understanding. "" symbolizes this journey and how it would look to those still in a lower place. Plato is saying that humans are all prisoners and that the world is our cave. The things which we perceive as real are actually just shadows on a wall. Just as the escaped prisoner ascends int .....

Reading The Light
Words: 490 - Pages: 2.... that Roger Pfingston wrote this story from his heart. I was able to put myself in Brian’s place and actually feel how I thought he would feel.
The story that stretched my imagination the most was “Charles” by Shirley Jackson. Even though children have wild imaginations, it did not occur to me that a child in kindergarten would tell such an elaborate lie. When I looked back in the story, I found the spot where I think that Laurie first started to tell his lie. “The teacher spanked a boy, though, ... For being fresh” was Laurie’s replay to his mother asking him what happened in school. “Laurie though .....

MacBeth

watch out for Macduff, the Thane of Fife . The second apparition said, “Be bloody,
bold, and resolute, Laugh to scorn the power of man, for none born of woman shall
harm Macbeth.”( act 4, scene 1, lines 78-81) This meant that no man that was born out
of the female birth canal could harm Macbeth. This statement contradicts the one
statement made by the first apparition. Macbeth thought that since Macduff was human
that he had to have been born through the birth canal. Macbeth did not know that
Macduff was born by c-section, he was untimely ripp .....

Analytical Essay - The Ruum An
Words: 566 - Pages: 3.... 'The Ruum', is the extra-terrestrial machine that chases Jim and it is this chase, that puts all its readers at the edge of his or her chair. Arthur Porges has created an entertaining story that is very suspenseful and exciting.
'The Pedestrian' is a totally different type of story, which brings up social issues that can be debated. The point of these issues is to make the people of today think about whether what they are doing is right or wrong. Ray Bradbury's story is about a man named Leonard Mead in a city, in America who goes walking at night. In this city all the other citizens stay and watch their 'viewing screens'.
The main issue .....

Voltaire's Candide: Satirical Literature
Words: 730 - Pages: 3.... the old women "strongly suspected a Reverend Franciscan..." for stealing Lady Cunegonde's money and diamonds. Although he was a reverend that didn't make a bit of difference to the old women when she assumed he was the thief. She said that because the reverend slept in the same inn, and had been in their room that night, that he must have stolen the money and diamonds. The reverends affliction with the church did not phase her at all. Not surprisingly, it turns out that it is the Reverend Friar who stole Lady Cunegonde's money and diamonds.
Another great example of Volatires prejudice is shown when Cacambo is talking to Candide about Paragua .....

the car and began to write the ticket, while I was sitting in my car thinking.
At first I thought about how much trouble I was going to be in and how much
money it was going to cost me. I was very depressed. Then I got to thinking.
What's the big deal? It's just a little traffic ticket. Sure, I may get in
trouble, but who cares? It's just a small detail in my life. I can whine and
complain, or I can focus on the more important things in life. Why waste away
the days feeling .....

Heart Of Darkness 2
Words: 1485 - Pages: 6.... this point is when Marlow describes, " Black shapes crouched, lay…The work was going on…this was the place where some of the helpers had withdrawn to die…they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom" (34-35). The natives were not "helpers", but slaves who were forced to work till physical exhaustion under the orders of the White colonist.
To further support the idea of racism as seen in this novel, consider the description that Marlow gives about an incident he encounters, "And whiles I had to look after the savage who was a fireman…t .....

“Homeless Veterans: Perspectives On Social Services Use”
Words: 726 - Pages: 3.... homelessness. In the discussions with the veterans, three types of problems were revealed: health and mental health, resource related, and public perception problems. The article states that homelessness in America has been well documented since the mid-1980. It really surprises me that it took to the 1980’s until homelessness was documented, or at least “well” documented. I believe homelessness has been a problem for hundreds of years. The article also states that between 567,000 and 600,000 individuals are homeless and on any given day 200,000 of them are veterans.
When I talk about cultural diversity I not only mean the o .....
