In "The Road Not Taken", the "wood" is merely the setting. It is described as a "yellow wood". This is obviously fall. I can see the orange, yellow and red leaves, lying all around. The gray/brown bark of the trees where the leaves are already fallen. The bright plumes where they have not. The trees also hide the road as it passes from sight around the bend. These are a few examples of how animals are used throughout the novel to mold the reader's understanding of the human character they correspond to. One of the strongest illustrated characters in this story is Mrs. Placer, or "Gran" for short. The first description we hear of Gran comes from an unidentified person who glorifies her as a woman of "Christian goodness" (p. 1452). In this first paragraph the reader learns that Gran has had tough times herself in the loss of her husband and by single-handedly run .....

Setting the tone of the novel in the readers mind is another function of Steinbeck's intercalary chapters. In chapter three, Steinbeck emaculatly describes the long tedious journey of a land turtle across a desolate highway. From the onset of his journey, the turtle encounters many set backs. All along the way he is hindered by ants, hills, and oak seeds under his shell. The turtles determination to reach his destination is most apparent when a truck driven by a young man swerv .....

But Remus mocked him, leaping over the thin furrow and saying that Rome's enemies would be able to get over its walls just as easily. Romulus was so furious he struck his brother dead. Free will comes with great consequences. Friar Lawrence and Juliet inflicted their own wound .....

The basic purpose of the establishment of news organizations is to report to the public what is occurring. Instead, the evolution of "Active Journalism", digging up a story, instead of waiting for it to "land in your lap" is the most detrimental effect to the bloated media. The problem with "Active Journalism" is that it will reveal stories that perhaps should have stayed private.
