Short Story Essay -
Words: 606 - Pages: 3.... forced to start in the middle of the action. For instance: 'A Glorious morning, comrade', by Maurice Gee, and 'The hole that Jack dug', by Frank Sargeson. Much less detail is provided to us about the characters, so again we imagine the aspects which are not given to us. Take for example the second paragraph in Frank Sargeson's 'The hole that Jack dug'. The narrator takes less than one paragraph to describe Jack. However, using special wording, the narrator can describe him in much detail using little words to emphasize a few of Jack's unique physical aspects: "The trouble with Jack's grin is that it shows too many teeth."

Joseph Conrad
Words: 1770 - Pages: 7.... 1). It has been said that Conrad’s style of writing is described as "...life as we actually live it...[is] to be blurred and messy and confusing-- and the abstract ideas...[of] actual experiences can sometimes produce in us, or in that part of us, anyway, which tries to understand the world in some rational way." Acquiring this from the novel gives the reader a psychological perspective in that they are receiving feedback in a conscious way such as a hallucination or a phantasm (Dintenfass 2). Readers have curiously questioned the purpose of his novels such as Heart of Darkness, but the answer is quite simple. "[The] p .....

Great Gatsby Essay
Words: 371 - Pages: 2.... no money and Daisy not being married, their
relationship may have worked out. But because of the circumstances,
their relationship was doomed to fail.
Of all of the relationships, I think that the most honest was
between Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker. This is ironic because it
was Jordan’s compulsive dishonesty that ruined the relationship. They
weren’t secretly seeing each other behind other people’s backs, they
weren’t unfaithful to each other, and they both cared for each other.
Nick saw Jordan’s dishonesty as a major flaw in her personality, and
he didn’t think she was worth it.
Out of all of the relatio .....

Words: 663 - Pages: 3.... falling relates to the weight causing his ultimate downfall - death.
The Things They Carried exhibits necessity in its advantageous aspects as well as its disadvantageous ones. It examines the burdens of each individual and the effects that the burdens have on the person in given situations. O’Brien deliberately makes the reader consider what constitutes a necessity by packing his story with heavy irony; a weight that sends conflicting images to the reader and causes him/her to examine the realms of necessity. The reader can go further and apply this distinction between real necessity and something that just provides emotional sustenan .....

In the first rendition of “To be or not to be”, the actor speaks quieter that I would have expected. Hamlet is portrayed as being extremely serious in this version. He continues to look up in space throughout the monologue, as if he is asking a question and looking for the answer, since he is very perplexed about what he should do in order to “cleanse the state.” Hamlet is facing an internal dilemma because he has to decide whether or not he is going to kill in order to make things better. Odysseus is a brave man that did great things. In The Odyssey he
conquers a monster using smarts and strength. He also looks out for his crew
mates. He is faithful to his wife, well, in his mind he is. He kills many men
on his own in a battle at his home. He cries a couple of times in the story,
showing sensitivity. Overall, Odysseus is a brave and caring human that is a

Everyone who passed the duchess received “much the same smile” as the duke (line 44). The duke expected to be the only man to receive a smile from his wife.
Another aspect of the duke’s character addressed in the poem is his condescending attitude. Two times in the poem the duke needlessly told the names of the artists who created the masterpieces that he owned (lines 3 & 56). He felt superiority over the emissary he was speaking to by dropping th .....
