Father Karamazov is a drunken womanizer who has lost much of his son’s respect. One of his sons named Ivan is a total non-believer. Ivan is a philosophical person who inadvertently inspires Smernakov, to kill father Karamazov. At the end of the story we see Ivan turn to god for support at the trial of his brother Dmitri. Dmitri is found guilty of murder and is convicted. However, the whole mess could have been avoided had the Karamazov family been more focused on religion and love .....

Through these problems and opposites which cross and overlap each other, Dostoevsky depicts social issues, especially the problem of murder, through an image of people who go through pain. He presents a graphical experience of ones who do not know how to deal with humanity and its problems. He does not even mention the deceased until the 25th line, and he never states her name (except for the clever reversal of her nickname in the title). Great Expectations is a circular book, with Pip finding his childhood home at the end of the story finally filled with happiness and a real family (Chesterton, 102). Hawthorne correlates this quest for perfection with Aylmer's intentions of formulating an elixir of life and mastering the art of alchemy.
