At the start of the novel, Frederick drinks and travels from one house of prostitution to another and yet he is discontent because his life is very unsettled, and lacking any order. He befriends a priest because he admires the fact that the priest lives his life by a set of values that give him an orderly lifestyle, which is another indication that desire for order is controlling his actions. Further into the novel, Frederick becomes involved with Catherine Barkley, and is first starting to show sighs of another force coming into play. His desire to be with Catherine is act .....

.... of the "coming of age." This "coming of age" is the point in everyone's life, child or adult, when we realize that we face substantial pain and emptiness ahead. The narrator begins the story by describing the times after supper when he and his friends would play on the streets. These nights were very gratifying for the whole group, and when the narrator's uncle used to drive up the street, they would all hide until he was safely housed. Or at times, Mangan's sister would come out to call him in for tea, and they would all hide until she either went in or until Mangan gave in and went inside. .... "After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all" (395). The death of her father and the shattered relationship with her sweetheart contributed to her seclusion. Though her father was responsible for her becoming a recluse, her pride also contributed to her seclusion. "None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such" (395). Faulkner uses the feelings of other characters to show Miss Emily's pride. Her pride has kept her from socializing with other members of the community thus reinforcing her solitary. But Miss Emily's father is still respon .....

.... of Greek mythology and his great understanding of plants show Friar Lawrence’s high level of education. When he is collecting plants in the beginning of scene three he speaks of the Greek god Titan. His reference to Titan shows he has had some background in mythology. Friar Lawrence also has a vast knowledge of plants and flowers. Friar Lawrence grows a magnificent garden which he tends to during the time in which he is not fulfilling his church duties. He speaks to Romeo about a plant that can be used for healing or as poison. This discussion leads into a speech by Friar Lawrence about people having a good side and a bad .....

.... also loved animals. Stanza thirteen praises the beauty and worthiness of oxen, tortoises, and mockingbirds. He believed all living things were connected. People are linked with the mares, cats, prairie dogs, and other creatures. Humans are even linked to the grass in the ground (Reef 50). That line sums it up. People are a part of nature. There is a birth, death, and renewal cycle that connects the two. Stanza six is a simple, believable explanation of death. It starts out in a conversation with a child asking what grass is. The line of answer is "the beautiful uncut hair of graves" (Whitman 2747). When we die, we are buried in .....

Oates writes stories concerning common American obsessions such as love, money, and evil. She portrays men as either very brutal or very weak, while the women in her stories are usually victims. If not a victim of assault or rape, the women find themselves searching .....

.... of all the places in the story are wonderful. Most scenes in The Hobbit are dark and mysterious, which I thought added to the grave mood of the story. The story of Bilbo's adventures is so dangerous that the many settings of the novel had to be gloomy enough to make up for the danger. There are many outstanding characteristics in this story. With so many excellent attributes in The Hobbit, I found it difficult to find many things that were not good. Tolkien's choice of a conflict was not very creative. The plot of this novel is based upon the traditional "going out and taking back what is yours" story. The many kinks and side adventur .....
