Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Words: 865 - Pages: 4.... the
lungs. Your lungs work by taking a breath of air, which travels down your
windpipe or trachea, into the bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes or
passages, look like trees, and branch out into smaller and smaller airways
the further they go further into the lungs. All along the breathing
passages, tiny protective hairs called cilia help keep the dust and other
pollutants from entering your lungs. These airways end in tiny air sacs
known as alveoli. The alveoli transfer oxygen from the air you inhale
directly into the bloodstream.
Chronic bronchitis is one of the major lung diseases that underlie COPD.
Chronic bronchitis often dev .....

Plagues And Epidemics
Words: 1152 - Pages: 5.... made to this
phenomena. In the case of Oran, the people raced to find a culprit for the
sudden invasion of their town, which became the unrepentant man. This is one of
Camus’ major themes; The way a society deals with an epidemic is to blame it one
someone else. Twenty years ago, when AIDS emerged in the US, homosexual men
became the target of harsh and flagrant discrimination, and even today are still
held accountable by some beliefs. While we may no longer lynch in the nineties,
we do accuse innocent groups, like the gay male population, for the birth and
explosion of AIDS in our society. Given, there are some differences between each .....

Dreams
Words: 2033 - Pages: 8.... researchers have
documented a number of facts about sleep. For instance, studies have shown
that sleep is classified into four stages according to depth as a sleeper
goes from a light sleep to a deep sleep. As people fall asleep they first
enter stage one sleep. Research has shown stage one sleep to be the
lightest of the four levels of sleep. In this stage the E. E. G, a machine
that measures types of brain waves, shows many alpha signals. Alpha signals
really are fast low voltage brain signals. The sleeper can also be easily
awakened while in this stage of sleep. The next level of sleep is stage
two. In which the brain shows spora .....

Abortion: Freedom Of Choice
Words: 357 - Pages: 2.... not kept legal many women perform
illegal abortions. This is such as self abortion methods wich are even more
dangerous; these included are lye, lysol, iodine douches, as well as self
inserted catheters, knitting needles and goose quills. When women lose
their right to choose abortion they may start performing them illegally.
This may do serious harm to the mother and her body.
Aborton is a woman's choice. Woman accepted the definition that a
womans prime role was as wife and mother and control of ones own body. Once
they had choices about life roles, they came to feel they had the right to
choose abortion to run their own lifes. An .....

Sturge Weber Syndrome
Words: 1324 - Pages: 5.... Weber Syndrome has a pattern, but a dominant mode is suggested
and likely. The syndrome has no preference to male or female, or race.
Another possible cause could be a congenital anomaly, which was suggested
in 1963, but is merely a possibility with no evidence to support this
theory.
The patients with the Sturge Weber Syndrome are usually only
impaired on one side of their physique. They experience slow reflexes or
the inability to even move a limb opposite the port-wine stain.
Retardation is by far the worst of all effects. Most do not endure
retardation, but in some causes the extent has been ghastly. On an average
40% of .....

The Problem Of Suicide
Words: 343 - Pages: 2.... his son's suicide on Nirvana's music. He said "Cobain's dark,
nilistic lyrics forced his son to end his life. I find this excuse
unacceptable. If your child is dead at least try to figure out why they
are dead instead for looking to point the finger at someone.
Problems like these have been around since the ‘80's. They started
at the death of Beatles star John Lennon. After the singer's death
numerous fans formed suicide pacts and many teenagers died. Authorities
were at a loss for what to do. Eventually the problem died out.
Parents who point the finger at others should examine their own
lives. Teenagers like thes .....

The Need For Sleep
Words: 414 - Pages: 2.... larger. The third and fourth stages
are where the sleeper is in a deep sleep in which their brain waves are
huge and slow which makes this stage the hardest to wake from. After an
hour or so, you shift into a highly active stage characterized by rapid eye
movements, hence the name REM sleep. Suddenly your brain waves are almost
the same as if you were awake. You're in the dreaming stage, which occurs
several times across the course of the night.
Now, what happens when we're deprived of the restful sleep we need?
We're less alert and attentive, more inclined to irritability and other
mood problems. These emotional changes ca .....

Side Effects Of Carl Djerassi And Syntex's Oral Contraceptive
Words: 1214 - Pages: 5.... would lead. I believe Djerassi, similar to most scientists of his day, was so entranced by the excitement of synthesizing his product and achieving his goal that he did not stop to think of the ramifications of his accomplishment. The ethical dilemma was not explored before hand, and this to me is the great tragedy of most scientific discovery, since I firmly believe each scientist is responsible for that which he creates. Djerassi does confront a few questions of ethics and morality after the fact.
On page 61, in chapter 6, he reflects on the argument of the use of poor Mexican and Puertorrican women for preliminary experiments. Is this j .....

Abortion Life Or Death: Who Chooses?
Words: 4447 - Pages: 17.... who would seek to protect the human who is still to small to cry aloud for it's own protection, have been accused of having a 19th Century approach to life in the last third of the 20th Century.
But who in reality is using arguments of a bygone Century? It is an incontrovertible fact of biological science - Make no Mistake - that from the moment of conception, a new human life has been created. Only those who allow their emotional passion to overide their knowledge, can deny it: only those who are irrational or ignorant of science, doubt that when a human sperm fertilizes a human ovum a new human being is created. A new human being who ca .....
