Papers on Legal Issues
The Mafia
Words: 1785 - Pages: 7.... By the turn of the century, the Sicilian Mafia was the most
powerful and well organized of all Italian criminal groups. “Like a cancer,
the Sicilian approach to crime was metastasizing, sending out its aberrant
cells to colonize social tissues elsewhere, especially in the United
States” (True Crime).
Immigration to the United States, from Italy, began around 1870. “
Of the approximately 5.3 million that have followed, approximately 25
percent came from Sicily” (Italian 4). The mass immigration took place
for many reasons. Many wanted to move because of poverty and rampant
inflation. Others wanted to move because of social .....

Gun Control
Words: 1113 - Pages: 5.... regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Advocates of gun control say that even with 20,000 gun control laws
already in existence, the serious problems due to firearm misuse continue.
Obviously, the controls that have been designed have not been sufficiently
effective. Therefore the pro-gun controllers argue, we need more uniform
legislation, more extensive gun controls, and effective enforcement.
Various pro-gun control organizations disagree on methods of gun control
needed. For example, there are individuals who would ban all handguns' a .....

Internet Censorship Laws
Words: 1189 - Pages: 5.... all that kind of sites on the Internet, the laws are not efficient at all. One of the biggest reasons for them being ineffective is the fact that the Internet sites are not hosted on the servers of only one country. Those servers are located all over the world and unless the government of Russian, Germany, Great Britain, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and all others pass those kind of lows the pornography won't be stopped.
Also I don't believe that pornography does as much harm as most people think. There are still a lot of movies out there with sexual scenes in them, and there are all those magazines, which are all over most of the grocery stor .....

Decriminalization Vs. Prohibition
Words: 1177 - Pages: 5.... not going to
be one of those sad cases, where my life is wasted away. I was not going to be
a crazed addict, who would stop at nothing to get a hit. I was not going to be
dodging the law my whole life. I was going to be everything I wanted to be, and
drugs were definitely not going to get in the way. I promised myself I would
not end up like Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin, both found dead after overdoses,
because I had the power to say no. I had read stories and seen news flashes
about the side effects of some drugs. I had read newspaper articles about
people in Rome, which is just a few minutes away, dying of heroin overdoses. I
had s .....

“To Legalize Or Not To Legalize”
Words: 1850 - Pages: 7.... are for pure enjoyment rather than harmful. There is a “users rights policy” which aims to eliminate abuse which harms society, while preserving the benefits of responsible users. This is to maximize the benefit of trade off drugs. (Toward a Users’ Drug Rights Policy - pages 382-383
There have been many assumptions throughout the years on what effects drugs are causing on society. In the 1960’s, the psychedelic drug movement said that drugs were used as a means of mind expansion, liberation, and ecstasy. Then in the 1980’s drugs were seen as a source of anguish, escapism, and denial of self. Neither of these assumptions are t .....

Illegal Immigration
Words: 676 - Pages: 3.... These thinly hidden agendas mean that often the debate on
illegal immigration cannot be separated from the debate on legal immigration.
According to Negative Population Growth (which is a suspect source),
Americans are firmly believe in tough laws against illegal immigrants and that
70% of Americans want no more than 300,000 legal immigrants to enter the U.S.
per year. In fact, N.P.G. says that 20% of Americans want immigration
completely stopped. Taking these numbers as the truth, it is clear that America
thinks that we have too many immigrants.
Such a dislike of immigration is interesting considering the success of
past imm .....

Cannabis
Words: 871 - Pages: 4.... the national formula described the drug for physicians thus:"a narcotic poison, producing a mild delirium. Used in sedative mixtures but of doubtful value. Also employed to color corn remedies." The next pharmacopeia released in 1942 (I gather they were relaesed every six years) did not have sativa in it. "The 1937 U.S. dispensatory said:" is used in medicine to relieve pain, encourage sleep, and to soothe restlessness. We have very little definite knowledge of the effects of therapeutic quantities, but in some persons it appears to produce a euphoria and will often relieve migrainic headaches. One of the great hindrances to the .....

The Rodney King Case
Words: 1656 - Pages: 7.... mind was clearly open to the issue of racism in American society today.
The Rodney King incident was a wake up call for all of America. The actions of Sgt. Stacy Koon, Officer Laurence Powell, Officer Tim Wind, and Officer Ted Briseno, which were captured on videotape the night of March 3, 1991, and the three days of rioting and violence that followed the trial shows how much differently people think when it comes to justice. In her article Karen Garner states that Rodney King and two friends were stopped and detained by the California Highway Patrol for allegedly speeding and evading law officers. Within minutes backup was there to assist .....

stimulates the brain. The drug causes insomnia, restlessness, and a fake sense
of acting normal. People either snort the drug up the nose or smoke it through
the mouth. After staying up for days on Speed the drug where's off and a person
will sleep for days, there is a larger fatigue and one will be so damn depressed.
I stopped talking to a friend because he was so addicted to this
horrible drug called Speed. One thing I noticed is he was a totally different
person when he was using speed. Whenever he was high on the drug he was a great
guy with all .....

Capital Punishment
Words: 1660 - Pages: 7.... severe crimes, but sometimes also for the
thrill and excitement. The Romans put slaves and prisoners in the Coliseum as
lion food while spectators enjoyed the sight (Horwitz 13).
In the early colonial states, the death penalty was applied for a vast
number of crimes, just like in England, the ruler of the states in this era (II
536). In England, in the 18th century, there were approximately 220 offenses
punishable by death. Some of them would today be considered as misdemeanors
and petty crimes (i. e. shooting of a rabbit, the theft of a pocket handkerchief,
and to cut down a cherry tree) (Horwitz 13). The majority of these were crimes
