Push/pull Theory
Words: 906 - Pages: 4.... should provide enough power to continue the circulation and distribution of water efficiently throughout the entire plant. Proof of root pressure is exhibited through a process called guttation. Through guttation, tiny droplets of water are sometimes forced out of some plants. Guttation only works when soil is almost completely saturated with water and leaves are not losing much water through evaporation. When the xylem is full of water, the molecules will not move back down the structure, but rather need to be expelled from the plant. They will move, by the process of osmosis, to an areas where there is the least amount of pressure. .....

Lichens
Words: 571 - Pages: 3.... as well as higher on mountains. One unusual type grows completely submerged in the cold coastal waters of Antarctica. Some inhabit the Earth's driest deserts, where they grow almost entirely underground and obtain light and moisture through small openings in the ground. Few grow near cities because most cannot survive in industrial air pollution. There are notable exceptions, however: in England, for example, Lecanora conizaeoides is actually confined to areas of high pollution.
The body of the lichen, the thallus, has three basic growth forms. These forms are crustose, foliose, and fruticose. Each form is adapted to live under different m .....

Jaguars
Words: 822 - Pages: 3.... Americas and its is by far the biggest cat on the continent. The range, which once spanned from the southern states of the USA down to the tip of South America, now centres on the north and central parts of the South American continent. Deinonychus is known from fossil remains found in south central Montana during the 1960’s. It was a carnivorous, bird-like creature with characteristics similar to that of a Velociraptor ( one of the stars from Jurassic Park ). This fearsome beast was quite a ravage hunter. The Deinonychus attacked its larger prey in packs and often were successful in doing so because of their menacing claw. By hunting in groups, members of the Deinonychus pack have brought down dinosaurs much lager .....

The Greenhouse Effect
Words: 604 - Pages: 3.... temperature might lead to at least partial
melting of the polar ice caps and hence a major rise in sea level, along with
other severe environmental agitation. An example of a runaway greenhouse effect
is Earth's near-twin planetary neighbor Venus. Because of Venus's thick CO2
atmosphere, the planet's cloud-covered surface is hot enough to melt lead.
Water vapor is an important "greenhouse" gas. It is a major reason why
humid regions experience less cooling at night than do dry regions. However,
variations in the atmosphere's CO2 content are what have played a major role in
past climatic changes. In recent decades there has been .....

Acid Rain 6
Words: 906 - Pages: 4.... oxides rise into the atmosphere and are oxidized in clouds to form nitric acid.
One of the most serious impacts of acid precipitation is on forests and soils. A lot of damages are being done when the sulphuric acid falls onto the earth as rain. All the nutrients in the soils are washed away making it hard for some plants to grow. The presence of nitrogen oxide and nitric oxide also can force trees to grow even though they do not have the necessary nutrients. The trees are sometimes forced to grow during late autumn when it is actually the time for them to prepare for severe winter weather.
One of the direct effects of acid rain is on .....
