Avalanches And Landslides
Words: 583 - Pages: 3.... near Alberta with ice and snow.
Another devastating avalanche incident is the 1964 Sherman slide, in which a
huge avalanche was triggered by the 1964 Alaskan earthquake. The slide spilled
out onto the Sherman glacier, during the big slide several other smaller slides
happened and those were the one that took lives in Anchorage, and destroyed
property
There are a couple of types of avalanches and how the destroy so much this one
is named "Loose Snow Avalanches"1, it starts' in a small area then grows in size
and mass as it descends.Another type is the "Slab Avalanche" it actually starts
in a large area of ice and snow and then begins to .....

Vivisection
Words: 1437 - Pages: 6.... humors by Erasistratus in Alexandria during
the third century (1:3). Later, in A.D. 129-200, the physician, Galen, used five
pigs to investigate the effects of several nerves (1:4). He is considered to be
the founder of experimental physiology. During the Renaissance Era, Andreas
Vesalius conducted experiments on monkeys, swine, and goats (1:3). By the late
eighteenth century, the methods of scientific discovery were changer to
experimentation of live animals by two French physiologists, Claude Bernard and
Francious Magnedie. They revolutionized methods of scientific discovery by
establishing live animal as common practice (1:4). Claude Be .....

Mescaline
Words: 673 - Pages: 3.... using capsules. It is sold as a street drug and it is for
readily available in the south western states and in areas where it is used
in ceremony.
Mescaline carries a wide margin for dosage error and has little or
no withdraw effects, although the dangers do increase with higher dosages.
A light dose (100-200mg) can give the user feelings of giddiness or anxiety,
and a moderate dose of Mescaline (200-300mg) begins to impair the senses.
Strong doses (300-500mg) will induce hallucinations and effect the user's
perceptions of color, time, and space. Heavy does of Mescaline (500-700mg)
and frequent use of mescaline will cause symptoms of sc .....

Acid Rain
Words: 593 - Pages: 3.... subsequently it dies. Around the 1970s the acid rain dilemma got worse, the acid rain has put
trees in danger and now they are starting to die off. The effects of acid rain on a tree is shown if
it has less foliage, yellow spots and produces many cones (Baines, 22). Secondly, acid rain
damages the trees through the soil by releasing metals that harm them even further (Lucas, 72).
Acid rain makes the trees lose their leaves, so when the trees try to regrow their leaves, buds
come instead, this process is called a panic shoot (M. 15). Large land areas which used to be
covered with forests are now gone, dead or dying .....

Birds
Words: 751 - Pages: 3.... to the albatross, which has a wing span
of eleven and a half feet. The largest bird is a bird that cannot fly, the
ostrich. Ostriches can stand almost eight feet high and can weigh near 350
pounds. Other extinct birds have been measured to stand over ten feet high.
The evolution of birds is still being argued. Most people believe that
birds evolved from reptiles. Because of birds mainly delicate bones, few fossils
have been left behind for scientists to study. The earliest bird fossils come
from archaeopteryx. The fossils that have been discovered from archaeopteryx
include six partial skeletons and one single feather. Archaeopteryx , .....

Preservation Of The Environment
Words: 849 - Pages: 4.... people drank contaminated water at a county fair in upstate New York. Two died and 65 others were hospitalized. If you think this couldn't happen to you, think again. A recent federal audit found that nearly 90 percent of all violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act go unreported. Some of those violations are harmless data-entry errors, but they also include potentially lethal problems such as contamination with pesticides and fecal coliform bacteria. Things must be done in order to preserve NJ environment.
The enforcement of laws against pollution is one of the things being done to preserve NJ environment. In theory, a regional EPA office .....

The Year 2000 Bug
Words: 2317 - Pages: 9.... was very expensive. In the early days of computing a Megabyte or a million bytes of information could have cost up to $100,000 to store electronically. This same amount of information storage can now cost around ten cents. Because of this expensive storage limitation code written for these older computers was compressed in any way possible. One way to cut down the size of code was to compress dates to a format only six characters long. So instead of April 14 1999 the date would be compressed to 4/14/99. At the time of this programming this seemed to be the best solution to the space saving dilemma. As we come closer to the mill .....

Acid Rain
Words: 1146 - Pages: 5.... schools, homes
and vehicles of all sort. These various energy sources contribute 23.1 million
tons of sulfur dioxide and 20.5 million tons of nitrogen oxides to our
atmosphere worldwide. When fossil fuels are ignited like oil and coal, they
release carbon dioxide, a so-called greenhouse gas that traps heat within the
earth's atmosphere which causes global warming that is taking place right now.
Also, it releases sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and various metals (mercury,
aluminum) that are released into the atmosphere that reacts with other airborne
chemicals (water vapor and sunlight) to produce sulfuric and nitric acid which
later .....

Deforestation Of The Pacific Northwest
Words: 1195 - Pages: 5.... that causes the
controversy. Under the ESA, loggers should not be allowed to cut down the old-
growth of the forest. The old growth of a forest includes the largest and
oldest trees, living or dead. In the case of the North Coast forests, this
includes some thousand-year-old stands with heights above three-hundred feet and
diameters of more than ten feet.
In 1990, the number of spotted owls dropped to 2000 breeding pairs. The
preservation of any species contributes to the biodiversity of an area. In an
ecosystem, the absence of one species creates unfavorable conditions for the
others. The absence of the spotted owl could have a signi .....

The Solar System
Words: 428 - Pages: 2.... These are the different phases known to man full, new, crescent, half, gibbous, and new moon.
The earth rotates in its axis once a day. The earth is a sphere shaped object. Its diameter is 12,750 km (7,923miles). It takes 23 hours and 56 minutes to rotate once, which is approximately one day. The sun orbits the sun ever 365.25 days. The average surface temperature is 15 degrees. The distance from the sun is 150million km (93 million miles). The sun is 150million km (93 million miles) away from earth. It is 1.4million km (864,000 miles) in diameter. Its surface temperature is 5,800 degrees Celsius (10,472 degrees Fahrenheit).
