.... such as Delacroix, are rather obviously religious natures. Others, such as Adams, are a bit more obscure. The Delacroix family has a name that literally means of the cross. The principal Delacroix character, Mrs. Delacroix, appears several times throughout the short story. She functions as a friend to Tessie Hutchinson, the woman ultimately selected for the sacrifice, but turns on her at the end along with the rest of the townspeople. Delacroix is not angry with Hutchinson, but helps kill her because of the tradition. The symbolism here is apparent. .... Heart of Darkness, but this time reading between the lines, I have discovered some racism Conrad felt toward the natives that I had not discovered the first time I read the book. Racism is portrayed in Conrad's book, but one must acknowledge that back in the eighteen hundreds society conformed to it. Conrad probably would have been criticized as being soft hearted rather than a racist back in his time. Conrad constantly referred to the natives, in his book, as black savages, niggers, brutes, and "them", displaying ignorance toward the African history and racism towards the African people. .... and Mrs. Wilson, husband and wife who have marriage problems. I enjoyed this book because of the interesting characters in the novel. I disliked this book because it was confusing. At first I thought Jim Gatz and Jay Gatsby were two different people. It was also confusing figuring out the theme of this novel . At first I thought it was about wealthy people not being happy, but all the wealthy people were happy in sick ways. What I also found to be confusing was all the married couples and all of the mistresses. Everyone who was married seemed to be cheating with a dozen mistresses. This was in the book as, He was about to pass him through when, for safety's sake, he crushed the mitten that Shukhov held out to him - the empty one. (Solzhenitsyn, Pg. 107) The smart move that he does is to place the empty mitten on top and take the risk that the guard will only search the empty one. Shukhov was lucky. All the animals on the farm (no matter what Napoleon did to them) would treat him as a powerful leader and whatever he said they would do. The evil of the pig’s head was inside them all and this evil was reflected in the way in which they ran their society. The masks were the final step in the transition from civilized boys to savages. It can be said that these masks allowed the boys to barbarically kill, hunt and live without any type of remorse. As with every cocoon, there is always a time when one must leave and bravely enter the unknown world behind the shell. Mrs. Flowers encouraged Maya to emerge and assisted her in finding her strongest defense and force, her love of literature, to open this barrier and allow Maya to end the silence. By doing this, it enhanced Maya's courage and willingness to conquer other barriers and fortresses. Maya's love of literature expanded and opened her horizons. One of Maya's favorite pieces of literature is The Tale of Two Cities .....
