Finally, he ends his book talking about the attitude of the men on the front lines. “Eye Deep in Hell� is a very descriptive and informative book. Ellis does a nice job giving in-depth insight as to what these men actually incurred in the muddied trenches and otherwise abyss known as the “Western Front� of the First World War. He is able to almost put us in the shoes of the men whom were actually there, making us realize what it was like being on the front line of World War I, fighting .....

It would seem that Fowles is trying to be fair to all of the characters by including the various endings which satisfy all of them. Fowles comments that the job of a novelist is "to put two conflicting wants in the ring and describe the fight", which is essentially what he has done. However it is hard to decide for whom to fix the fight in favor of when one owns both fighters. Fowles also briefly mentions allowing "freedom of characters" in his writing. The fluidity of his own psyche is reflected in the fluidity with which the characters around him take up dynamics that reflect his inner fears and worries. The constant and crippling manipulation of the male, as he introduces oppression and hopelessness into the lives of his women, is equated with the twentieth century's worst period. Words such as Luftwaffe, panzerman, and Meinkampf look are used to descibe her father and husband as well as all male domination.
