Odysseus A Hero
Words: 1214 - Pages: 5.... scrolls each told a chapter in Homers plays. The modern version of The Odyssey is a combination of all these scrolls that could have existed as separate stories about Odysseus’ travels, his encounters, and how he obtained his status as a hero.
Ancient Greece has always been an interest of mine. In 6th grade a teacher that I had know for my whole schooling showed a movie every week. One week we watched “Jason and the Argonaughts”. Ever since then I could never get enough Greek mythology. In freshman year of high school we read the annotated text book version of The Odyssey. Lucky for me, I transferred English .....

THE ILLIAD
Words: 711 - Pages: 3.... have entered a new millennium filled with special effects, and computer graphics , many of us continue to appreciate the excitement of the written word from those authors that produce masterpieces. The Iliad does just that. Homer’s use of language evokes the passion of his characters and their heartfelt emotions. The Iliad embodies action at it’s very onset, and although long in content, captures and to an extent , possesses it’s reader. I am sure that it is the style and meter, that Homer uses to convey his thoughts, that make the Iliad such a classic epic. Crawford pg. 3 In the opening lines of the Iliad, words of war capture the rea .....

The Pearl: Prequel
Words: 700 - Pages: 3.... found one in the
leader oyster it would destroy the finder and find its way back to the sea.
This conference I told you about is a great as well as horrible
experience for all the oysters. Triumph and defeat lurks around all corners. The
contending oysters must run the test and those standing at the end must do it
again until one oyster stands. This was the first time in history that more than
three tests had to be run. It came down to Chuck the clan favorite and Tinagel
the outcast. Finally with a little cheating and a lot of dishonesty Chuck took
the pearl to gain its power till the coming year when he would relinquish
control of the .....

Some Dreamers Of The Golden Dream: Imagery
Words: 716 - Pages: 3.... Bernardino Valley, tele-evangelism, Christian gospel spread
through television, is prominent. It is "the California where it is easy to
Dial-A-Devotion, but hard to buy a book." (p.4) It is a society where anyone
with money can buy a devotion to God with the dialing of a number. The usage of
religion as a money-making business defiles the sanctity of societys most sacred
and cherished belief. However, money is made so morals and ethics are ignored.
Another example of this immorality is Edward Foley, Lucilles Millers attorney.
He says, "We dont want to give away what we can sell," (p.27) referring to
information about Lucille Mi .....

The Great Gatsby: Adults In The Great Gatsby And Adults In The 80s And 90s

Daisy. Tom's prejudice on other races was revealed when he said, “nowadays
people begin by sneering at family life and family institutions and next
they'll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and
white,”(137). In society today many races are discriminated against because
they are thought to be inferior. In school, at work, and in anyone's
neighborhood there is discrimination because of the skin color and they are
harassed. There was violence in the 20's with gangs and mob leaders such as
Al Capone. He was a notorious racketeer who fought with other gangs. Today
there are also gang crimes like in th .....

Around The World In Eighty Days: Summary
Words: 573 - Pages: 3.... character in the novel is Passepartout. Passepartout was an
innocent Frenchman that just after being hired as Mr. Fogg's servant was told to
pack for a trip around the world. Throughout the entire novel the reader is
informed of all the peculiar habits of Fogg that Passepartout had to support.
My least favorite character is Fix the detective. He followed Fogg
around the globe, he missed arresting him in India and Hong Kong through
incompetence, and as soon as they arrived back in London, he did arrest Fogg but
erroneously.
The main conflict of the novel was time. Time caused a lot of pressure
on Fogg; he had to get back to London on .....

Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5: Fate
Words: 534 - Pages: 2.... tripping",moving back and
forth throughout time instantaneously, should not matter to him since his
life is already predetermined. Why does it matter that you live your life
in chronological order? According to the view point of the Tralfmadorians,
the same exact things are going to happen, an idea that is indeed biased.
Based on the fact that Tralfamadorians cannot understand the human concept
of time, they have the ability to pick and choose when they want to live
each moment of their lives ,unlike humans, especially Billy Pilgrim who
has no control of his unpredictable "time tripping[s]."
Furthermore, the Tralfamadorian's belief that .....

Morrison's Jazz: Characters' Actions
Words: 1760 - Pages: 7.... extenuating circumstances
of his history are described. Dorcas plays the role of the piteous,
innocent woman who is stuck in the middle of this crisis at the beginning,
but is relieved of this generalized characterization through her actions
towards Joe and her search for self-satisfaction. Even though the history
that is recounted in this novel is more gossip than fact, it presents a
more accurate story than the one depicted in the “offical story” located at
the beginning of the novel. Toni Morrison attempts, through these three
characters to illustrate how the narrator's perception of each character's
history can alter the reader's und .....

magistrates that she is going to stay in town, since it reminds her of her

from civilization that Hester and Pearl did not have a friend in the world
besides each other.
Pearl, is a descendent both of sweet children who fashioned a play
maiden out of snow and of the friend's infants who stoned the gentle
boy(Van Doren 130). Pearl causes several disturbances to Hester throughout
the novel. Governor Belligham plans to take away the child, if it was not
