Bilbos Transformation In The H
Words: 2292 - Pages: 9.... you like! Why not tomorrow? Come tomorrow! Good-bye" (p. 6)! Bilbo does not really like the idea of an adventure and tries to rush Gandalf off in hope that he might forget that he even asked him to go. Hobbits are not considered to be very adventurous creatures, and bravery certainly does not come to mind when thinking about Bilbo Baggins sitting in his nice warm little Hobbit hole at the beginning of the story. The first sign of bravery is when the great spider tries to tie him up and Bilbo fights him off with his little sword:
The spider lay dead beside him, and his sword-blade was stained black. Somehow the killing of the giant spi .....

bosom, I made no more resistance to him, but let him do just what he pleased and
as often as he pleased…" (Defoe 30). Later in the story, Moll becomes
acquainted with a woman who persuades Moll to work for her as a prostitute.
Even though Moll is now married, she agrees to sell her body for profit. "I
found presently that whether I was a whore or a wife, I was to pass for a whore
here…" (Defoe 144). Moll's acts of prostitution show that she will carry out
illegal practices in order to get money.
Moll's many instances involving thievery also express the theme of greed.

Ordinary People
Words: 1876 - Pages: 7.... differently with other characters. Another thing I liked was the story's theme. I think the theme of would be not to try to repress one's feelings, even when it may be difficult to face them. Feeling occasional depression or anger may be what we must sacrifice for the happiness in life. Guest's style of writing is also very interesting to read. I enjoyed the way she would use the word "he" when describing a character rather than stating who the character was. I was still able to identify the characters simply through their reactions and feelings. The only possible negative aspect to this novel would be the constant mood of depression. I re .....

to become more deeply involved with her evil ways. "Wilt thou go with us
tonight"(113) asked mistress Hibbins, yet Hester refused to sign her name in the
black mans book on that night. She explains that the only reason she does not

and the poor woman as “white-trashy”. When Mrs. Turpin converse with her
black workers, she often uses the word “nigger” in her thoughts. These
characteristics she gives her characters definitely reveals the Southern
lifestyle which the author, Flannery O'Connor, was a part of. In addition
to her Southern upbringing, another influence on the story is Flannery
O'Connor's illness. She battled with the lupus disease which has caused
her to use a degree of violence and anger to make her stories somewhat
unhappy. The illness caused a sadness inside of Flannery O'Connor, .....

stand between the natural sorting process and social status of the people. These
changes can not be considered as historical because the age of democracy is just

Youth : Then & Now
Words: 268 - Pages: 1.... All in all, it is clear through the passing time,
attitudes have changed.
1 "O Youth! The strength of it, the faith of it, the imagination of
it!" Conrad's example of youth powerfully describes the greatness of it all.
Marlow and the other young crewmen possessed this quality of youth and
powerfully exemplified it on the treacherous voyage of the Judea. The youth of
today, as many feel, do not have the strong characteristics of past generations.
One hundred years ago, a young man may have gone on a dangerous voyage like
Marlow, but a young man today leads a more secure, cushioned life.
The changes in attitudes over time may .....

Angel's intentions and morality overshadowed his actions. Angel Clare's

Nature that milkmaid is (176)." After he came from Brazil, Angel realized

occupied the narrator's house before the narrator make us wonder if the
priest led a life of vanity. His early obsession with Mangan's sister now
seems in vain. “I had never spoken to her ... and yet her name was like a
summons to my foolish blood. (4)” He feels ashamed and ridiculed by his
earlier inability to communicate with Mangan's sister. He sees how
distracted he was by his anticipation of the bazaar. He recalls that he “
had hardly any patience with the serious work of life. (12)” The narrator
