Laura exhibits very negative thoughts and feelings about herself. Laura assumes that everyone notices her flaws and dislikes her because of them. Laura fears that she will grow up to be an old maid. She does not relate to other people well because of her shyness and unpopularity. Her only pleasures consist of being home with her family, her glass collection, and her father's records. Laura's insecurities are manifested whenever she confronts an unfamiliar situation and that causes her to become .....

.... being a polluted, very unkind, and rushed city. The setting is more of a emotional setting than a physical setting. As I stated it takes place in South Africa, 1946. This is a time where racial discrimination is at an all time high. The black community of this land is trying to break free from the white people, but having little success.  It is this so called racism that is essential to the setting of the story. Without it, the book would not have as much of an impact as it does. The story begins, as many great stories have begun, with a solitary man taking a long and dangerous journey to a distant land. .... use of satire is illustrated very well in the Prologue of "The Pardoner" when the Pardoner truthfully states to the people "and after that I tell my tales; I show bulls of popes, cardinals, patriarchs, and bishops; and I speak a few words in Latin, to give color and flavor to my preaching, and to stir them to devotion." (Chaucer, 339) To think that anybody would bluntly tell of their deceitful ways to people that confided and believed in everything they said is another tactic used by Chaucer to exaggerate what he is trying to get his audience to see. He provides many exaggerated examples of the Pardoner deceiving, fooling and lying to .....

He refers to the Lilliputian emperor, a being not even six inches high, as “His Imperial Majesty� and blindly agrees to perform any demanded service, even though he could easily overpowe .....

Beth is a housewife that lunches with the other women of town and she is very cautious about her appearance to the community. Beth cares more about herself and her social standing then she does about her family. For example, when Calvin and her were getting dressed, she made him change his tie. That stuck in Calvin’s mind as why did it matter what he wore to his son’s funeral. Beth was very loving to Buck, though. Pa and Tom dismiss what he says and decide to continue. When the family finally reaches California, they stop near a stream before going across the desert. The Joad men go in to bathe and are soon joined by two other men. One man says they are leaving Californ .....
