Words: 652 - Pages: 3.... on the road? Some of this trepidation came out in the open when researchers found that 25% of 16-year-olds has some kind of crash in the first year driving (Getting Your Drivers License).
Some action needed to be taken in order to insure safety on the road. More than 20 states have a program where first time offenders (or those who refuse a Breathalyzer test) are forced to face a panel of drunken driving victim’s families. Liability on bars, parents, and others who buy for minors has increased. In the website www.aaahoosier.com, teens can chat about driving safety with parents. Capital Punishment: The Only Defense
Words: 614 - Pages: 3.... in capital cases than in any other punishment. Because of the finality of the death penalty, the most grievous maldistribution occurs when it is imposed upon the innocent. However, the frequent allegations of discrimination refer to maldistribution among the guilty and not to the punishment of the innocent. Maldistribution of any punishment among those who deserves it is irrelevant to its justice or morality. Punishments are imposed on a person, not a race or economic group. Guilt is personal. The only question that needs to be asked is, does the person who is to be executed deserve the punishment? And that is up to our justice syste .....

Ross Rebagliati And The Marijuana Issue
Words: 601 - Pages: 3.... said to give the athlete an unfair advantage over the others. Any
ruling based on the use of performance-enhancing drugs is justified, but
since marijuana has little or no effect on an athlete's performance, and it
would not give him an advantage over other athletes, a ruling based on the
use of marijuana isn't necessary. In addition to this, many doctors have
stated that marijuana gives the athlete a disadvantage over others because
it could make that athlete tired, or weak.
Rebagliati's urine test showed trace amounts of marijuana. Doctors
say that it is very possible that one could inhale this small amount,
strictly from being .....

reinforced chair with belts crossing his chest, groin, legs, and arms. Two
copper electrodes, dipped in brine or treated with Eletro-Creme to increase
conductivity, are attached to him, one to his leg and the other to his head. The
first jolt, between five-hundred and two-thousand volts depending on the size of
the prisoner, is given for 30 seconds. Smoke will begin to come out of the
prisoner's leg and head and these areas may catch fire if the victim has been
sweating profusely. A doctor will examine him and if he still shows life signs,
more jolts of two-thousand .....

The Death Penalty
Words: 1980 - Pages: 8.... Fourteenth Amendment's
guarantees of equal protection of the laws and due process. But in 1976, in _
Gregg v. Georgia_, the Court resuscitated the death penalty: It ruled that the
penalty "does not invariably violate the Constitution" if administered in a
manner designed to guard against arbitrariness and discrimination. Several
states promptly passed or reenacted capital punishment laws.
Thirty-seven states now have laws authorizing the death penalty, as does the
military. A dozen states in the Middle West and Northeast have abolished
capital punishment, two in the last century (Michigan in 1847, Minnesota in
1853). Alaska and Hawaii h .....

Capital Punishment: Justice To The Victims And Their Families
Words: 369 - Pages: 2.... of all life in contempt. This upholds the value of all life.
Many would argue that this so-called "eye for an eye" approach is
unconstitutional, citing the 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Th
8th Amendment states "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive
fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." This was
meant to limit the severity of punishment imposed on an offender by judge
or jury, but instead it creates a paradox with its usage of the words
'cruel' and 'punishment.' Webster's dictionary defines cruel as "causing,
or of a kind to cause pain, distress, etc." Using this definition, one has
to wond .....

Juvenile Justice System In America
Words: 2179 - Pages: 8.... as adult criminals. Sentences for all offenders could be harsh and the death penalty was occasionally imposed.
The First institution expressly for juveniles, the House of Refuge, was founded in New York City in 1824 so that institutionalized delinquents could be kept apart from adult criminals. By the mid-19th century, other state institutions for juvenile delinquents were established, and their populations soon included not only young criminals but also less serious offenders and dependent children. The movement spread rapidly throughout the U.S. and abroad. These early institutions were often very rigid and punitive.
In the second ha .....

Sexual Offenders
Words: 511 - Pages: 2.... sanctions of . Victims feel justified that the offenders spend a lifetime in jail. Problems With Gun Control
Words: 906 - Pages: 4.... it had a major impact on
this country because State and National governments were unable, or lacked the
power to protect the people. This Amendment gave the power to the people to
bear arms for protection. As Clede points out in his article, it was not the
intent or purpose of this Amendment to bestow unlimited rights upon the people.
The question to ask today is, are the people responsible enough to have the
unlimited rights that they seem to have under this Amendment. Clede states,
"that does not mean that the government can constitutionally prohibit all
weapons, but it probably means that the government can reasonably regulate a .....

showed that 43% of all 14-19 year olds had drunk at least on one
occasion illegally on a licensed premise within the last year. 2
Nearly a quarter of all alcohol consumed by young men aged between
14-17 years was drunk illegally on licensed premises. 3
