Internet The Advantages And Disadvantages
Words: 2517 - Pages: 10.... and other physical appearances. The Internet while still young in age has grown rapidly, spreading to countries world wide and connecting 50 million users. With its popularity, it is incumbent upon our society to recognize how the Internet works and to be aware of its advantages as well as disadvantages.
While seemingly high tech the Internet concept is rather simple. Computers speak to one another and send information. This is accomplished by sending and receiving electronic impulse, and then decoding them into a message. In order to communicate with one another they are linked up in a network. They are then able to access information fr .....

Cloning
Words: 1601 - Pages: 6.... exist in the controversial
topic of cloning.
When Dr. Ian Wilmut, a 52-year-old embryologist at the Roslin
Institute in Edinburgh announced on that he had replaced the genetic material of
sheep's egg with the DNA from an adult sheep, and created a lamb (Dolly), the
topic of cloning "created" many new questions of its own. None were as
controversial as: Will they apply this to humans as well? According to Dr.
Wilmut, the answer was "there is no reason in principle why you couldn't do
it"(clone humans), but he added, "All of us would find that offensive."(Wilmut
as quoted by NYTimes, Daniel Callahan, 02/26/97).

Differences And Effects Of Natural And Synthetic Fertilizers
Words: 679 - Pages: 3.... plants need to retrieve all of their nutrients from the soil, many
methods have been developed in order to find ways to improve or change the soil
to suit the plant's needs. Soil, in science as well as in common gardening,
must undergo detailed inspection, to detect such things as the pH of the soil.
A soil with a pH above 7.0 is called an alkaline soil, and will commonly kill
plants. Mineral content, as mentioned above, is also a concern, and must be
clearly monitored. After inspection, it is common for minor organic materials
outside fertilizers to be applied, such as peat moss, ground bark, or leaf mold.
It is after these st .....

Chesapeake Bay Pollution
Words: 1118 - Pages: 5.... populations have declined. Species, such as striped bass have increased to the point that they are commercially viable again.
The Chesapeake Bay's decline was evident as early as the 1950s. In the late 1970s, state and federal scientists began an extensive study to determine the reasons for the Bay's decline. Three major problems were identified; excess nutrients from wastewater, agricultural lands, and developed land; sediment in runoff from farms, construction sites, and eroding lands; and possible elevated levels of toxic chemicals.
Nitrogen and phosphorus are considered good things because they support the bottom of the food chain. .....

Artificial Life
Words: 648 - Pages: 3.... have taken place,
drawing increasingly wider attention and a growing number of participants.
Theoretical studies of a-life, however, had been in progress long before
the 1980s. Most notably, the Hungarian-born U.S. mathematician John VON
NEUMANN, one of the pioneers of computer science, had begun to explore the
nature of very basic a-life formats called cellular automata (see AUTOMATA,
THEORY OF) in the 1950s. Cellular automata are imaginary mathematical
"cells" --analogous to checkerboard squares--that can be made to simulate
physical processes by subjecting them to certain simple rules called
algorithms (see ALGORITHM). Before his .....

Hydroponics Growing Without Soil
Words: 2420 - Pages: 9.... were built in the United States. The majority of these were located in Florida. Most were out of doors and subject to the rigors of the weather. Poor construction techniques and operating practices caused many of them to be unsuccessful and production inconsistent.
How is the quality of the food today affected by the methods of Hydroponics of today?
Body
The growing media that is used for gardening greatly effects the production of the plants. If sand is used as a medium it should be tested thoroughly for any residue that might cause infected growing medium. The sand should be cleaned at l .....

Hurricane Andrew
Words: 574 - Pages: 3.... Mexico. Also, the hurricane continued to
move at a relatively fast pace while its track gradually turned toward the west-northwest.
When Andrew reached the north-central Gulf of Mexico, the high pressure system to its
northeast weakened and a strong mid-latitude trough approached the area from the
northwest. Steering currents began to change. Andrew turned toward the northwest and
its forward speed decreased to about 8 kt. The hurricane struck a sparsely populated
section of the south-central Louisiana on the 26th. The landfall location is about 20 n mi
west-southwest of Morgan City.
Andrew dropped sufficient rain to cause local floods eve .....

Environmentalists
Words: 985 - Pages: 4.... McKibben shows us the damage we have done to the natural world and makes a plea for an end. He was born to two journalist parents, married a journalist, and wrote for and edited the The New Yorker . Abbey and McKibben write differently but they are bonded in that they both demand change.
Abbey and McKibben would agree that something is wrong with America’s attitude toward the environment. However, Abbey’s writing invites doing battle with those who invade the forests while McKibben simply tries to point out that there is a problem and that something radical must be done to eliminate it at its base. Abbey’ .....

Aggression As A Mental Disorder In Canines
Words: 692 - Pages: 3.... (Dodman 23). Dominance-related aggression is usually directed toward those who reside with the dog which makes affected dogs difficult to live with (Horwitz 42). According to Dodman, traditional treatments of dominance-related aggression include an increase in exercise, brushing up on obedience training, and ceasing to engage in any rough play or wrestling (35) . More recently, however, drugs such as Prozac have been used as treatment. Dodman says that Prozac is,"...extremely effective at curtailing dominance-related aggression...enabling owners to quickly gain the upper hand,"(34). Another type of aggression found in canines is seizure-r .....

Alchemy

The resulting oxide was supposed to possess marvelous powers, and it was thought that there resided within in the individualities of the various metals, that in it their various substances were incorporated. This black powder was mystically identified with the underworld form of the god Osiris, and consequently was credited with magical properties. Thus there grew up in Egypt the belief that magical powers existed in fluxes and alloys. Probably such a beli .....
