Sharks
Words: 2116 - Pages: 8.... may look at the Great
White Shark in a similar manner. Perhaps it’s the way that Hollywood uses a mix
of fact and fiction in the series. This may have frightened many people into
hating the Great White for it’s ferocity. It might have also been the size of
the shark in the movie that’s kept thousands of people off the beaches and out
of the water. Better yet, it could have been the overall storyline: A Great
White shark with an eating disorder and a taste for human flesh. Perhaps that’s
what is keeping vacationers from grabbing their trousers and snorkels.
Over all, there have been 1026 attacks on humans by sharks in the last .....

Electrolytes
Words: 612 - Pages: 3.... have ions that can move and carry charges without solvents.
There are two ways to be able to have ions that are able to conduct
electricity, the dissociation of Ionic Compounds, and the Ionization of
Polar Covalent Molecular Substances.
The Dissociation of Ionic Compounds is where particles are
ionically (electrically) bonded together. They already made out of cations
and anions, but in their solid state the ions are locked into position in
their crystal structure, and can’t move around. When the ionic compound is
dissolved into water the water molecules, which are polar,(having a
positive and a negative end) will be a .....

Plate Tectonics
Words: 516 - Pages: 2.... played a part in this, but it was mainly rejected because of the lack of a good explanation for the movement of the continents. Wegener's theory for the movement of continents was called continental drift. This was not believable at the time because there was no way the continents could move through the rigid ocean floor.
During WWII, people started to explore the ocean floor and discovered evidence that would prove Wegener's ideas about land movement. The most interesting feature of the ocean was the ridges running along the ocean floor. It was discovered that earthquakes were abundant along the ridges that let magma flow from them. T .....

Wilderness Required
Words: 938 - Pages: 4.... discovered.
A trek to the peak of a snow-capped mountain or an Arctic voyage through glaciers and icy waters are the journeys that most would consider essential to life. Colin Fletcher was one to claim that wilderness is needed:
“And when at last I walked on past the two juniper trees
toward the far side of the plateau I found I was feeling sorry
for any man who was not free to abandon whatever futility
detained him and to walk away into the desert morning with
a pack on his back.”
Such experiences allow for one to gain a sense of who they are, not as a superior being, but as one living creature in an expansive world. This is a .....

Lighting Advancments
Words: 2248 - Pages: 9.... to operate (no rain, minimal wind). Another disadvantage is that fire, if not handled properly, could result in a brush fire or even burn down their shelter. An advantage was it was efficient when conditions were correct. It provided an inexpensive form of lighting, and could be used for cooking and heating. Due to the persistent problem of limited fuel, inhabitants looked for a way to prolong the fuel. (Thwig 29-34)
The next step in lighting that followed was a candle. Candles offered one main advantage over the fire by itself, fuel. A candle was able to provide a long burning light and was relatively inexpensive to produce. Candles were .....

Down Syndrome 4
Words: 1135 - Pages: 5.... development. This ethnic insult came under fire in the
1960s from Asian genetic researchers, and the term was dropped from
scientific use. Instead, the condition became "Down's syndrome." In the
1970s, an American revision of scientific terms changed it simply to "Down
syndrome," while it still is called "Down's" in Europe.
In the first part of the twentieth century, there was much speculation of
the cause of Down syndrome. The first people to speculate that it might be
due to chromosomal abnormalities were Waardenberg and Bleyer in the
1930s. But it wasn't until 1959 that Jerome Lejeune and Patricia Jacobs,
working independe .....

The Y2K Problem
Words: 770 - Pages: 3.... will produce subtle errors that may be passed on, undetected at the source, in an ever-expanding circle of bad data. And some systems will stop working altogether.
How might systems fail? Let's look at an example program in which the omitted century is assumed to be '19' and the program's function is to figure out how old you are. If you were born in 1958, then in 1999 this program will calculate your age as 99 minus 58, or 41. That's fine, but what happens when the century rolls over to '20' in the year 2000? In this program, the year will appear as '00' but the century will still be assumed to be '19' -- so the program will calculate y .....

Nature Vs. Nurture
Words: 595 - Pages: 3.... descriptions of
themselves for a tall, unattached, male senior whom they anticipated
meeting. Those expecting to meet a man who liked nontraditional women
described themselves as relatively nontraditional. Those led to think he
favored traditional gender roles described themselves as more traditionally
feminine” (Handout - Diversity and Community).
I believe that one's immediate family, rather than society, has a
greater influence on gender roles. For example, girls who group up without
a mother or older sisters tend to be less feminine because all they have
are male role models. Another example of how the family influences gender .....

Environmental Crisis
Words: 1524 - Pages: 6.... Examples are the desertification of the Sahel
in Africa, the one child policy in China and the mis-management of our oceans.
The Sahel is a strip of land that extends for more than 6000 kilometres across
the southern edge of the Sahara desert. It stretches from Senegal and
Mauritania in the west to Ethiopia and Somalia in the east. These nations are
among the world's poorest.
The area is one of social and biophysical crisis because of the way the
population are forced to live; they are destroying the productivity of the land.
The alarming rate of population growth and ever increasing pressure on the land
have initiated an expans .....

Dangers Of Steriods
Words: 445 - Pages: 2.... and endurance. Steroids also help in the healing
process of muscular tissue by first injuring them, then the muscles
heal quicker adding more fiber increasing their bulk. Many athletes
turn to steroids more often because they're cheaper then marijuana or
cocaine. A ten week cycle of testosterone cypinate and methandrostone
costs only about one hundred dollars. Steroids are also very hard to
trace because of their water base composition. They can pass through
the body within two days. All these benefits of steroids help an
athletes become more competitive and increase their chance of being a
winner. Of course everybody w .....
