Mitochondrion
Words: 215 - Pages: 1.... more of a
parasite that invaded primordial cells and evolved along with them. A
mitochondrian’s main purpose is to burn energy through a slow method of
combustion, which will consume as much air to burn as fire will, just to break
down nutrients into simpler substances. These simpler molecules then bond with
the atoms that will need the energy to function. Then, enzymes in the
mitochondrion break up the atoms and then recapture them again. This time, the
energy atoms will be bonded in a different molecule to form ATP, or adenosine
triphosphate. ATP has an adenosine core and three phosphates attached to it,
hence its name.
These phosphat .....

Heroin A Long Dark Path
Words: 1871 - Pages: 7.... in the poppy plant. Although the purity of the heroin that reaches the streets is becoming greater, most street heroin is cut or diluted. Usually this is done with another drug, or a substance such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, or quinine. Street heroin can also be cut with strychnine or other poisons. The reason heroin is one of the most deadly drugs is because there are varying rates at which the drug is diluted. Therefore a user never knows exactly how pure the drug is, hence, they do not know how much of the drug they should take, often leading to an overdose. Like alcohol, heroin is a depressant that slows down all the body f .....

Should The Harris Superquarry Go Ahead?
Words: 2034 - Pages: 8.... be more appropriate to their needs? Would the presence of a
quarry restrict the choice for further development? Could an integrated
approach be adopted and a 2nd generation quarry planned? The decision of
whether or not to go ahead cannot be delayed indefinitely as Norway and Spain
are looking at developing their own. If it is to go ahead then an early start
will give Harris a stronger position in the market.
2 INTRODUCTION
This report examines the controversy and key issues surrounding the superquarry
at Rodel, Lingerbay on the southern coast of the Isle of Harris (Figure 1) and
attempts to find an acceptable solution. The quar .....

Can We Say "NO" To Recycling
Words: 2392 - Pages: 9.... costs in collecting, sorting
and manufacturing; therefore, it is necessary for the government to overcome
such problems of recycling to be worth while and for manufacturers and consumers
to consume less. Recycling has proven its efficiency in solving the problem of
garbage disposal at landfills1. By the accumulation of garbage throughout the
years, space available for garbage has largely diminished. In the states for
example almost 67% of their waste stream ends up in landfills.(Scott 25). This
has in fact increased the price of disposal. As Kimball stated "tipping fees" at
landfills, is so often prohibitive(3), and some cannot find la .....

Hurricanes
Words: 907 - Pages: 4.... to friction. In the Northern Hemisphere usually travel first in a northwestern direction and in the higher latitudes turn toward the northeast. In the Southern Hemisphere the usual path of a hurricane is first to the southwest and then turning toward the southeast.
are characterized by strong winds and pouring rain. Thunderstorms and waterspouts appear in the storm's cloud system. All contain an eye. The eye of a hurricane is a low pressure, calm area in the middle of the storm. The air in the eye is sinking and this causes there to be no rain in this area and little wind. This gives the impression that the storm has passed throu .....

Hepatitis B Virus
Words: 247 - Pages: 1.... that respectively encode the viral DNA-polymerase, envelope protein, pre-core protein (which is processed to viral capsid) and protein X. The function of protein X is not clear but it may be involved in the activation of host cell genes and the development of cancer.
Hepatitis B is a serious public health problem that affects people of all ages in the United States and around the world. Each year, more than 240,000 people contract hepatitis B in the United States. A highly infectious virus that attacks the liver causes the disease. (HBV) infection can lead to severe illness, liver damage, and, in some cases, death.
It can take, on average, .....

Mechanical Energy
Words: 493 - Pages: 2.... as burning. The individual relies on food for fuel
which contains energy©giving substances that our bodies can store until we
need this energy to use our muscles. When we do use our muscles within us,
we may not always be sure that heat is given off. Our bodies do not burst
into flames but the perspiration on our skin is a clue to what is happening.
The movement of the windsurfer has a different explanation. The
windsurfer is propelled along by a sail which collects mechanical energy
from the winds that sweep along the water. This energy has been produced
by the sun which warms the earth's surface and sets the air above in mo .....

What Is Electricity

AMAZING ELECTRONIC FACT:
If you scuffed your feet long enough without touching anything, you would
build up so many electrons that your finger would explode! But this is
nothing to worry about... unless you have carpeting. Although we modern
persons tend to take our electric lights, radios, mixers, etc. for
granted. Hundreds of years ago people did not have any of these things,
which is just as well because there was no place to plug them in. Then
along came the first Electrical Pioneer, Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite
in a lightning s .....

Cloning
Words: 1840 - Pages: 7.... right to tamper with God's creations.
It has been almost a hundred years since the first clone was ever created. In the year 1902, a German embryologist by the name of Hans Spermann used a strand of hair as a noose to split apart cells of a two-celled salamander embryo, and obtained a normal salamander from each cell. Thirty-six years later, Spermann used nuclear transportation to create a clone. He took the nucleus, the cellular structure that contains the most genetic material and controls growth and development, and removed it from an egg cell of an organism. Spermann had successfully created another clone. Later on, other scientists w .....

Clean Coal Technologies
Words: 1551 - Pages: 6.... including anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous, and lignite. Anthracite has the highest carbon content, anywhere from 86 to 98 percent. And produces nearly 15,000 Btu's per pound (British Thermal Unit, is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of the pound of water one degree Fahrenheit) (Bartow 1) The second type of coal is Bituminous or soft coal. It's the most plentiful type of coal in the States, and is mainly found in the eastern and middle part of the North American continent. Bituminous coal is primary used to generate electricity, and has a carbon content of 45 to 86 percent and a heat value of 10,500 to 15,000 Btu' .....
