Polio
Words: 732 - Pages: 3.... (like cars or planes) depend on huge amounts of fuel every year. When these fuels burn they introduce smoke and other, less visible, by-products into the atmosphere. Although wind and rain occasionally wash away the smoke given off by power plants and cars, the cumulative effect of air pollution poses a grave threat to humans and the environment.
In many places smoke from factories and cars combines with naturally occurring fog to form smog. Smog has been long recognized as a potential cause of death, especially for elderly persons and those with severe respiratory ailments (like asthma). Air pollution originally resulted from lar .....

protozoans, algae, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and rickettsiae.
A microbiologist is a scientist who studies life forms that can
only be observed by means of a microscope. Microbiologists use many
criteria to classify bacteria.
The Beginning of Microbiology
Zacharias Jansen created the microscope. Although Robert Hooke is
the one who made it widely known. In 1665 Hooke published a book called

Dolphins
Words: 878 - Pages: 4.... can grow to be 30 feet long. The pilot whale is also considered a
dolphin.
Dolphins were once hunted by commercial boats for the small amount of
oil that can be extracted from their body. This oil is used to lubricate small
parts in watches. Cheaper oils have been found, so dolphins are not hunted for
this reason anymore. Dolphins can be caught in tuna nets by accident. Since
dolphins have to breath at the surface they drown in tuna nets. It is estimated
that 4.8 million dolphins were killed in tuna nets from 1959 to 1972. Under
pressure from animal rights activists tuna consumers will not accept tuna from
canners that do not protect dol .....

Psychology-Dreams
Words: 1952 - Pages: 8.... stories with frequent shifts of scene. One difference between waking and dreaming consciousness is that the latter tends to be an internal hallucinatory-like experience disconnected from the external world.
Many dreams collected in laboratories are rather common, but some people tend to experience some bizarre dreams. Early in the 20th century, Sigmund Freud believed that dream content was composed of the mental processes different from that used in the awake state. He believed this was what dominated the dreaming mind. He described this "process" as characterized by more primitive mechanisms, by rapid shifts in energy and em .....

Effects Of Smoking
Words: 464 - Pages: 2.... to heroin or cocaine. When a person
smokes a cigarette the body reacts immediately to the
chemical nicotine. Nicotine begins to effect a smoker’s
blood pressure, the flow of blood from their heart, the
heart beat and breathing rate.
Cigarette smoke also contains carbon monoxide, the same
poisonous gases released from a car exhaust pipe. Carbon
monoxide is a colorless and odorless, highly toxic gas that
reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry.
Combined with the effects produced by the nicotine, it
creates an imbalance in the demand for oxygen by the cells
and the amount of oxygen the blood is able to supply. .....

Words: 1892 - Pages: 7.... sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and the air current can send them
thousands of miles from the source. When the acids fall to the earth in
any form it will have large impact on the growth or the preservation of

NO DEFENSE
Areas like Ontario, Canada, mainly southern regions that are near
the Great Lakes, have substances such as limestone or other known antacids
that can neutralize acids entering the body of water thereby protecting it.
However, large areas of Ontario that are near the Pre-Cambrian Shield, with
quartzite or granite based geology and little top soil, do not posses
enough buffering capacity to neu .....

Humpback Whales

Biology Heat Loss Practical Write Up
Words: 1982 - Pages: 8.... 200cm3 with a surface area of 160cm2 and a surface area to volume ratio of 1.25:1, will loose heat at the same rate as a similar flask of volume 625 and a surface area of 500 which also has a surface area to volume ratio of 1.25:1. However, generally when you increase the size of an object the surface area to volume ratio decreases so in this example it is very likely that the two flasks in question are different shapes.
In this experiment the two flasks which will be used will different surface area to volume ratios as follows:
100 cm3 flask: Volume = 100, Surface Area = 115. Surface Area to Volume Ratio =
115
---- : 1 = 1.15 .....

UFOs And Alien Life

Humans have mistaken "meteor trails, comets, odd shaped clouds, balls of lightning, burning marsh gases, airplanes, lights of cars, birds, and many other objects as UFOs," (Kraske 22). Pranksters have also misled UFO investigation by doing actions that confuse and mislead humans. For example, they flash images of car headlights and city lights on the Earth. Pranksters also confuse people by tossing discs from tall buildings and taking pictures of spaceship models. One man was suspected of taking pictures of a realistic chicken-hatching machine. Human psychology has also played .....
