Thomas Gordon: Active Listening
Words: 562 - Pages: 3.... In this method, the door of communication is not merely opened, but participants learn how to keep it open.
Gordon says that in order to learn how to listen actively, the teacher or parent must understand more about the communication process. He says that when a child decides to communicate with a parent or teacher, it is because he has a need. The child’s organism is in a state of “disequilibrium” because there is something going on inside him. He wants, or needs something.
In order to bring the organism back to a state of equilibrium the child begins to talk. Gordon gives the example of hunger. When a child is hungry, he m .....

Laughing And Sense Of Humor
Words: 862 - Pages: 4.... out.
(This is especially true when attempting to figure out females.) Clues can be
found anywhere. The books a person reads, the movies they watch and the games
they play all reveal little bits of their character.
It is a fair comment though that the most revealing character trait a
person has is their sense of humor. Few things are as distinguishable and
noticeable as humor. Laughs echo throughout rooms and they are as unique as
snowflakes. Jokes have been told and retold for centuries by men and women of
all races. While it has often been said of someone that “they have no sense of
humor,” it is untrue. Senses of humor vary .....

Age Of Reason
Words: 1419 - Pages: 6.... In his widely-read essay, “Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason and Seeking Truth in the Science,” more commonly and more conveniently known as “Discourse on Method,” Descartes describes his task as such: “as soon as my age permitted me to pass from under the control of my instructors, I entirely abandoned the study of letters and resolved no longer to seek any other science than the knowledge of myself, or of the great book of the world”(16). The knowledge of oneself, and of his so-called “book of the world,” can be obtained solely through a process of reason. He argues that it is reason .....

Serial Killers, The Minds, The Methods, The Madness

Murder has always been a part of society, and serial murder has always existed. The terminology used to describe this most heinous of crimes, however has changed over centuries. Four hundred years ago, killers in the European countryside were referred to as lyncanthropes, a Greek word meaning wolf-man. An Italian physician named Cesare Lombroso came up with a similar term for these serial k .....

Censorship Of Music In The Media
Words: 2043 - Pages: 8.... was arrested for wearing a jacket emblazoned with an expletive, reflecting his opinion of the military draft. The Supreme Court threw out this conviction as a violation of the First Amendment. Surely the State has no right to cleanse public debate to the point where it is grammatically palatable to the most sensitive among us. Thus, the general rule remains that so long as the means are peaceful, the communication need not meet standards of acceptability.
Some advocates of government action to restrict access to music have called certain music obscene and suggested that this might permit federal regulation. Such suggestions cannot be reconci .....

The Potential Dangers Of Air Bags And Children
Words: 955 - Pages: 4.... a crash.
Even older children who have outgrown child safety seats are at risk from a deploying air bag (Airbags and Seat Belts). If they are properly restrained by lap and shoulder belts, they still face the risk. Airbags could seriously injure or even kill an unbuckled child who is sitting too close to the air bag or who is thrown toward the dash during emergency braking or a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified 86 crashes where the deployment of the passenger air bag resulted in fatal head or neck injuries to a child. Eighteen of these deaths were to infants in rear-facing child safety seats. Most of .....

Personal Freedoms
Words: 356 - Pages: 2.... to bear one child. Most other cultures would find these practices outrageous and a violation of their freedom.
However, there are still certain universal freedoms, like the right to voice your own opnion, to wear clothes of your choice and freedom to get a good education. Some of these things are so important that there is laws to enforce them. Like school for instance, you are legally required to attend regular classes until the age of sixteen.
There are some freedoms that we are entitled to but that are violated by others. Take your right to safely walk down the street for example, in some neighbourhoods that is virtually out of the que .....

Child Abuse: An Exposition

think about what he does to you when you are alone. He walks over to the couch
and sits down next to you. His hand slithers it way onto your knee and you
cringe in revulsion. “Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you,” he chides. Your mind
feels panicky as you feel his touch in more intimate places and you scream
involuntarily. His grip tightens as he places his hand over your mouth. “We'll
have to do this the hard way!” comes his intense whisper. You flail your arms
at him, but it doesn't help. His writhing massive body is on top of yours, and
you feel so powerless. Eventually, you sink into a s .....

The Effects Of Race On Sentencing In Capital Punishment Cases
Words: 1069 - Pages: 4.... in Gregg v. Georgia, 428 U.S. 153 (1976), the
Supreme Court decided, with efficient controls, the death penalty could be used
constitutionally. Yet, even with these various controls, the system does not
effectively eliminate racial bias.
Since Gregg v. Georgia the total population of all 36 death rows has
grown as has the number of judicial controls used by each state. Of the 3,122
people on death row 41% are black while 48% are white (Gest, 1996, 41). This
figure may be acceptable at first glance but one must take into account the fact
that only 12% of the U.S. population is black (Smolowe, 1991, 68). Carolyn
Snurkowski of the Florid .....

Animal Rights

crash or a violent head injury.
It isn't right to cause pain, suffering, and certain death to animals
just for our benefit. Many scientists also agree that this experimental
procedure was wrong but only because primates have higher intelligence. I
don't think it is right for any animal of high or low intelligence, to
suffer that way. In other laboratories animals are confined to small cages
or locked up so that thay can't move. They are then used to test cosmetics
and household chemicals. They have chemicals poured on to their eyes and
skin to see if they cause irritation. These experiments would hurt the
animals by caus .....
