Reform Movements Of The Nineteenth Century
Words: 1533 - Pages: 6.... of the reasons the temperance movement began. In 1810, a census concluded that 25 million gallons of spirits were being produced in America. At this time America was not only a hard-working society, but a hard drinking society as well (Tindall and Shi 545). Males were mostly to blame for the mass consumption, and alcohol was beginning to be blamed for many social problems of the period. Temperance groups, such as the one in Lynn, Massachusetts, began to form and lobby for prohibition (Faler 369). Here, a group called The Society for Industry, Frugality and Temperance was formed. They believed, as did all other temperance groups, that .....

Identities And How They Are Formed
Words: 663 - Pages: 3.... to
express them truthfully. Jean-Jacues Rousseau's theory about corruption relates
to the "clean slate" idea. He stated that corruption come from society. So if
one is not influenced positively they may end up corrupt and be a hindrance on
society. If a child grows up in a "dysfunctional family" they may be at a
disadvantage to a child like my brother who is getting the same social education
from my parents and the society we live in.
Charles Harton Cooley also touched on the idea of identities. He
believed that identities are formed from interactions with people in society.
This would mean that the more interactions one has the more choi .....

Right-Wing Hypocrisy
Words: 268 - Pages: 1.... an agent of the devil. I disagree
totally with that assessment. Just because someone is pro-choice or
doesn't attend church regularly doesn't mean he is not a good Christian. I
thought the teachings of Jesus encouraged tolerance and forgiveness, not
persecution.
For instance, these groups preach "family values", with the father
working, the mother cooking and cleaning, and the kids being subservient to
their parents. I am surprised more women don't find this sexist and
offensive. Roles in each individual family are, and should be, different.
People should adapt to life based on their individual talents, not on what
extremist po .....

Civilize The Wilderness
Words: 516 - Pages: 2.... Many questions can arise when contemplating
civilizing the wilderness.
The wilderness is being civilized for one main reason. That reason is
technology. Technology plays an important role in everyone's lives today.
Without it, we would not have computers, fax machines, cellular phones, and all
of the modern conveniences that we have today. The fact is, that many people
believe that the wilderness is like an unborn country. A country that has
nothing and is striving to become more advanced. We see this as an opportunity
to better it and make it seem like we are actually helping. But, are we really
helping? In my opinion, no. I fee .....

Immigration To America
Words: 334 - Pages: 2.... have seen she was sick and taken her to the hospital and saved her life.
Immigrants that came through Ellis island usually got jobs earlier and easier. Perhaps because they came to America in a time of great need, of that job offers felt more comfortable because they were legal, trying hard learning English and they had been in America for longer. Maybe it is because Ellis island immigrants didn't live in a time of such great discrimination.
No matter who, immigrants came and still come for the same reasons. Coming to America is a great dream, and it seems that they get all they are looking for. They escape political, economic, and relig .....

Japan: Social Customs

Japanese people love to have a party in Western style, and a Wedding party is of no exception. Almost all wedding halls have a miniature of a Japanese shrine inside, to have a new couple vow their marriage to the Japanese God, as well as many rooms to celebrate their wedding in Western style after the vow. A bride wears a pure-white Japanese Kimono (Shiro-muku) in front of the God at first. Then she changes it to a colorful Kimono at the beginning of the wedding party, then again to a beautiful Western-style in the middle of the party and finally to a pure-white wedding d .....

Teaching Respect To Children
Words: 504 - Pages: 2.... do not teach their kids this valuable trait, if enough
people are taught to respect others it will catch on. In most cases, if
someone shows respect to someone else, that person is more likely to
respect them back; causing a chain reaction.
Right now, not enough parents are teaching their kids respect and
this causes violence, crimes, and can even lead to drug use. It is easy to
see how these problems can be easily solved or would be nonexistent if
their was respect. Violence would not be a problem, because no one would
fight if they had respect for the other person. The next problem is crime.
Nobody is going to steal or vandalize .....

Terrorism
Words: 540 - Pages: 2.... bomber, the rebel
guerrilla, the liberation front, the armed forces of the state?
Terrorism is fundamentally a political act. Terrorists act to advance a cause
they mean to create tyranny, either directly or indirectly, so that the
political order that they prefer can take the place of the current one.
Terrorists can be either rebels seeking to overthrow a state or states seeking
to overthrow the international order or states seeking to maintain privilege for
rulers and stifle dissent among the people. In every case the motivation for
terrorism is explicitly without an exception, political.
Terrorism has a long, if tainted,. pedigree. Ari .....

They hold seminars for employees, establish 24-hour hotlines and provide security for victims, and initiate and establish inquiries. Companies should create and publicize a forceful policy against sexual harassment. Companies must act before a problem occurs. The EEOC encourages employers to "take all steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring, such as affirmatively raising the subject, expressing strong disapproval, developing appropriate sanctions, informing employees of their right to raise, .....

valuable. There are many legends and superstitions surrounding ginseng. The
Chinese have long believed that the ginseng is a cure for many aliments and can
even make one live longer. However, Western researchers are have been unable to
prove this. Today, many manufacturers add ginseng to such products as hair
tonics, shampoos, skin creams and even soft drinks. Also ginseng can be bought
over the counter in drug stores under such names as “Ginkoba” and “Ginsana”. “
Ginkoba” is supposed to increase mental alertness. “Ginsana” is supposed to
increase physical energy.
Tea was first used during the reign .....
