Teenage Suicide
Words: 1350 - Pages: 5.... (Homer 19).
Another sign is talking about suicide and the wish to die. It is myth that those who talk about suicide will not do it. Studies have shown many of those who have killed themselves have given clear indications of their plans in advance, both in words and actions (Homer 19).
Indications that a person feels depressed, sad, and hopeless-complaints about feeling worthless and useless (Homer 19).
Giving away loved possessions such as a favorite jacket or sweaters. Also, making final arrangements or making a will might be a warning sign (Homer 19).
Changes in sleeping habits-the person who can stop sleep, or falls asleep easily, .....

Controversial Pornography
Words: 1335 - Pages: 5.... nudity and
pornography who find the human body and sex portrayed in many forms to be
beautiful. However, there are also many extremely conservative individuals who
take offense to such "artwork" and find its contents appalling. And those who
enjoy the nudity and sexual content exhibited in pornographic materials should
marvel and delight in its details. Those who do not should simply look away. In
the words of Justice William O. Douglas, "no one is compelled to look"
(Brownmiller 663). There is no concrete manner to define materials that are
"obscene" or "offensive" because various images come to mind among individuals
when words simi .....

Welfare
Words: 885 - Pages: 4.... Security, or Supplemental Security, or the food stamps program. I will discuss the four programs individually.
Medicaid provides free medical care to the poor people. Funds vary from state to state. In some situations, people who may be able to pay daily needs, but can't afford large medical bills may also be able to receive Medicaid. Some services paid for are bills such as doctor's visits and nursing home care. Most Medicaid funding comes from the federal government. The rest is supplied by the state. Each state runs their own Medicaid program.

The Women Of The Nineties
Words: 450 - Pages: 2.... of going to work everyday then their children do not have to be raised in daycare. It is not fair to the child to have to spend ten hours a day in a facility where they can not get the attention they need and deserve. Children need their parents. Only a parent can truly give their child what he/she needs. A daycare provider can not give each and every child in the daycare center the love and attention that one of their parents can give them.
One of the things people do or are supposed to do when they have a baby is make sacrifices. Many women today are too selfish. They want it all: a husband, a child, and a career. It is too hard to bala .....

Garrett Hardin In "Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against The Poor"
Words: 863 - Pages: 4.... The government does not ask for my permission to give these people my
money. By letting these people on our lifeboat the government is drowning us all.
"If we do let an extra 10 people in our lifeboat, we will have lost our 'safety
factor,' an engineering principle of critical importance" (page 757). I cannot
take a chance in helping people if it is going to put me in risk.
Instead of giving the money to non Americans it should be used only in
America. The money used to help the poorer countries can be very useful in the
United States. The middle class people in America get no help. More of that
money can go toward the middle c .....

Teenagers And Sex
Words: 637 - Pages: 3.... to their children about sex.
83% of teens who give birth are low-income or poor. Maybe these teens can’t afford to learn more about sex. We need to teach this in more of our schools! The average teen spends 23 hours per week watching TV. Prime time TV contains roughly three sexual acts PER hour! Studies have proven that this viewing is associated with sexually permissive attitudes and behaviors. Until we, as a society, decide to take charge and develop responsible media messages that encourage positive behaviors and attitudes, this will continue.
I disagree very strongly with the author’s choice of harsh words geared toward teen parents. .....

Money And The Way It Alters The Mind
Words: 625 - Pages: 3.... that people
have is due to the manipulation of how the businessmen choose to portray
what is necessary for consumers to possess. Unlike Americans, Germans
find a “University professor,” more of a commodity than a “celebrity.”
Unfortunately, Americans loose their focus on reality because the ones with
the power are the ones who are money hungry and run the world. It is
insane how the majority of Americans see celebrities as heroes instead of
the scientists who try to make the world a better place. The world is run,
not necessarily by the money itself, but the mentality that people have
which makes them crave the power that come .....

Affirmative Action: Why It Should Go
Words: 1822 - Pages: 7.... civil-rights demonstrations, and racial tension was at an all time high. Most of the corporate executive and managerial positions were occupied by white males, who controlled the hiring and firing of employees. The U.S. government, in 1965, believed that these employers were discriminating against minorities and believed that there was no better time than the present to bring about change. This action, that started with good intentions, would later lead to a different and more complex form of discrimination.
When the Civil Rights Law passed, minorities, especially African Americans, believed that they should receive retribution for the .....

Legalizing Of Homosexual Marriages
Words: 1737 - Pages: 7.... all states to recognize these marriages as
far as federal benefits are concerned. Congress has approved a bill, the
Defense of Marriage Act, that will allow states to decide whether to
recognize homosexual marriages. The second part of the bill would define
"for federal purposes" as the union of a man and a woman. Under such a
definition gay and lesbians, even if they win the right to marry in Hawaii
or elsewhere, would not be able to file joint federal tax returns, claim
federal pension, or survivor's benefits, or be allowed to file for green
card status (Gallagher 21).

Crime
Words: 726 - Pages: 3.... per thousand from between 1983 and 1992 rose 9.4 percent but from 1991 to
1992 it went down 4 percent. In recent years crime has been decreasing.
Property crime, murder, robbery, and burglary have all decreased at least three
percent in recent years but that is not much. There is one exception; rape
which has gone up 3 percent. Violent crime has risen 40.9 since 1983 while in
recent years it has only gone down a tenth of a percent. This may be one of the
reasons people feel less safe. People aren't afraid of larceny or property
crimes. They are afraid of violent crimes, which is why is recent years they
feel insecure.
