The Adults Are Always Right?
Words: 1482 - Pages: 6.... want. If we know something is going to be asked of us and we
don't want to do it, we turn our brains into "Nag Mode." To define Nag Mode, is
simple. Every syllable that comes out of the mouth of an adult is heard as ‘
nag.' For example:
Adults say: "clean your room! ."
Kids hear: "nag nag nag!"
Adults say: "Stop watching television."
Kids hear: "nag nag nag nag nag nag nag."
They think of us as being lazy, and irresponsible, selfish and useless.
Some adults quiver when they hear how we will one day run this world. What makes
us lazy, the fact that we watch an hour of tele .....

Stereotypes Of Pro Athletes
Words: 782 - Pages: 3.... people is that pro athletes aren't educated. This is such a farce since the vast majority of them have attended prestigious colleges and universities, and received degrees in different fields of study. A popular misconception is that the educations they did earn were in areas like Liberal Arts, or other general fields of study which didn't challenge their mental capabilities.
Another stereotype is that pro athletes received preferential treatment while in college. Many believe that if an athlete needs a certain grade to remain eligible to play sports, then the faculty would grade him or her lighter than the rest of the class. We have al .....

Societies Scapegoat
Words: 1708 - Pages: 7.... other underlying issues. Society today
has an entire array of different afflictions that plague us from day to day.
The television is of very little significance alongside the landfill of troubles
that influence children today. Besides, trying to get networks to cut out
violence and aggression entirely would be like trying to get Jesus Christ to
write a top ten list of reasons why Christianity sucks. (It's not going to
happen.)
TV is not the reason that our youth courts are filled to capacity with
court dockets so hideous you would swear that you were looking at the start of
the apocalypse. Television programs are not the reason for .....

Affirmative Action In Seattle
Words: 1046 - Pages: 4.... candidates on the basis of gender or race.
What the City of Seattle's affirmative action program does is very
simple: first, it gives City managers and personnel officers a snapshot of
the labor market, so that they are aware of the availability rates for
different groups for a given job classification. Through these availability
rates, the City can determine whether or not women, people of color, or
persons with disabilities are underrepresented in a given job
classification within the work force; second, the City's affirmative action
program encourages managers and personnel officers to make special outreach
efforts into gro .....

Immigration & Americas Future
Words: 2066 - Pages: 8.... twenty years.
We must understand what these numbers mean for the U.S. Let's look at
the question of jobs. The International Labor organization projects a twenty-
year increase of 600 to 700 million people who will be seeking jobs.
Eighty-eight percent of the world's population growth takes place in the
Third World. More than a billion people today are paid about 150 dollars a year,
which is less than the average American earns in a week. And growing numbers of
these poorly paid Third World citizens want to come to the United States.
In the 1970s, all other countries that accept immigrants started
controlling t .....

Why Televisions Should Be Unplugged
Words: 431 - Pages: 2.... kids. Obviously such programs are
counter-productive to the educational process.
Teen violence is on the rise at an exponential rate. Many teens watch
action movies such as Terminator and its sequel or the Die Hard trilogy and
conjure up bright ideas to go vandalizing or attacking innocent people. This is
especially true when speaking of the gang situation that is currently plaguing
our nation. Before the era of the television, crime like the kind we now have
was virtually non-existent.
Obesity is another indirectly related effect of television on our bodies
for people of all ages. The term “couch potato” adequately suits people wh .....

Distribution Of Condoms Is Unnecessary
Words: 836 - Pages: 4.... them in schools will only decrease the rate of teenage pregnancy. It will give teens the opportunity to have safe sex, rather than sex with no condoms. “If people are going to have sex anyways, at least distribution of condoms would make it safe.”(Jason Arnold) Although it is true that teenagers are already engaging in sexual activities, they can still have safe sex without distributing condoms in schools. They can get the condoms for themselves, and the schools wouldn’t be giving the impression that sex is o.k. as long as you use a condom.
2.5 million teens are infected with sexually transmitted diseases every year. (Margaret Pru .....

Words: 1596 - Pages: 6.... the idea behind the show. Is that the biggest problem the world is facing today? Who to blame in some strange couples breakup? It is disturbing to know that the same audience members and at-home viewers that are voting on whom to place the blame, will one day be voting for the leaders of our country. Worse yet, they may someday be the leaders of our country.

Puerto Rican Cultural And Religion
Words: 481 - Pages: 2.... difference was in attendance. The Spanish mass had
a considerable higher attendance than did the English mass. Also the appearance
of the manner of dress. The attendees of the Spanish mass were more formally
dressed than those of the English mass. Another major difference was in the
music. The English mass had the "traditional" European "angelica" type singing.
The Spanish mass, however, had more upbeat music, along with the use of
"traditionally" Carribean instruments like maracas, for example.
What does this suggest about the religious community of Puerto Rican
Americans? I think that it is a balance between assimilation and .....

Gambling
Words: 627 - Pages: 3.... like that.
I went into a Texaco on November 1, 1999, and I noticed two machines to my left as I walked through the door. I looked at the machines and noticed a sign that read “Must be at least 18 years of age to play”. I had $1.50 in quarters in my pocket, so I played. I was ahead in the game, so I decided to cash what I had out. The machine printed out a yellow ticket. I lost the rest of the credits and took the ticket up to the clerk and he told me that it was worth one dollar. I picked a scratch off and won ten dollars. This experience shows there is a difference between being eighteen and being twenty-one. If the machine .....
