In Father Paneloux’s second sermon he says “my brothers, a time of testing has come for us all we must believe everything or deny everything. And who among you, I ask, would dare to deny everything”(Camus p.224). He believes that is a test of faith. He wants the people to still believe in God. Through all that he has been through Paneloux has not lost his faith. “Since it w .....

The Scarlet Letter: Symbolism Of The Scarlet Letter
Words: 1103 - Pages: 5.... not for her child Pearl. Pearl was a gift sent from god to remind her of her wrong doing every moment. A symbolic way to look at it is that she was a walking, talking live sermon preaching out against sin to others.
With that said, Pearl’s personality was also shown very well throughout the movie. Her exuberant disposition caused the townspeople to believe she was a “mysterious little elf”. One could tell at times she was the exact opposite of the Puritanical ways. Pearl’s taunting and malicious character sometimes caused Hester to make unwise remarks such as, “Thou art not my child! Thou art no Pearl of mine!” I have .....

The Lottery: Setting, Atmosphere, And Mood
Words: 579 - Pages: 3.... and the grass was richly green.” This gives the reader a feeling of calmness and serenity. The atmosphere created becomes quite ironic in the end, when the specific nature of ‘the Lottery’ is revealed. Jackson also creates this irony with the setting and character assignment. The story takes place in the town square, where family and friends are joined in tradition for the annual ‘lottery’. When given this setting, the ending of the story turns out to be a big surprise for the reader.
The author’s diction in The Lottery also plays a large role in the atmosphere and mood of the story. Euphonic terms are used throughout the wo .....

The Great Gatsby: The Green Light
Words: 1041 - Pages: 4.... is
much more complex than this. A symbol may also stand for something else as
seen in its simplest case. A symbol sums up a large number of ideas and
attitudes. The complexity of a symbol may be more intense than a sign
because it can have several meanings in different situations. (Beckson and
Ganz 207)
The green light is first mentioned in chapter one of the Great
Gatsby. Nick, the narrator of the novel, sees Gatsby curiously stretching
his arms out towards the water. Nick went to see what Gatsby was looking
at and all he could see was "...nothing except a single green light, minute
and far away, that might have been the end of a doc .....

Injustice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Words: 341 - Pages: 2.... injustice during the time the novel was set in. Through the whole trial, he did not retaliate at the white people, he did not get mad because he was improperly accused, he just showed the level of respect which everyone deserves. He handled the injustice with a manner reserved only for gentlemen, which is a good description of what he really was.
The third person to suffer injustice in the novel was Boo Radley. Many accusations were claimed about him even though they were untrue. Just because he didn't leave his house, people began to think something was wrong. Boo was a man who was misunderstood and shouldn't of suffered any injustice. Bo .....

A Farewell To Arms: Style
Words: 607 - Pages: 3.... celebrate with. The inn was dark and smoky inside and afterward
when you went out the cold air came sharply into your lungs and numbed the edge
of your nose as you inhaled.
The simplicity and the sensory richness flow directly from Hemingway's and his
characters'--beliefs. The punchy, vivid language has the immediacy of a news
bulletin: these are facts, Hemingway is telling us, and they can't be ignored.
And just as Frederic Henry comes to distrust abstractions like "patriotism," so
does Hemingway distrust them. Instead he seeks the concrete, the tangible: "hot
red wine with spices, cold air that numbs your nose." A simple "good" becomes

More repented from speaking and in doing so, stopped Cromwell and King Henry VIII to obtain permission they so badly needed in order to convict Thomas of treason. Cromwell desperately needed evidence that More actually said something to someone, so he could prove that More would commit an act against England. To do this Cromwell created a story that said Thomas More and Richard Rich had said words about the King and in doing so, More would be sentenced to death. This was established in the court where Richard Rich lied.

Women In China During The Long
Words: 1260 - Pages: 5.... This is especially true for upper class women.
The philosophical idea of yin and yang is found throughout Chinese culture, literature, and social structure. The idea is that the world is made up two opposite types of energy which must be kept in balance with one another. Neither is greater than the other, or more important than the other. In respect to gender, yin is female and yang is male. Yin is private life within the family and yang is public life outside the family. Men were to focus on public life and outside affairs and support the family while women were to focus on private life and support the men.
For many men resisting the .....
