Words: 504 - Pages: 2.... as she thinks back to her abuse and
questions her father. It is an example of this mistrust as well as the
confusion which goes through a childs mind.
"Since I was a little ten-year-old child, I had to deceive and hide
from the world and my mother that my father took a sexual interest in me.
Remember how you taught me that art of deceit? First you put me in a
situation that had to be kept a secret then you pledged me to secrecy...As
a ten- year-old child, what was I supposed to do? You are an intelligent
man-you figure out the options available to a ten-year-old in that
position." (Rush, 1980)

The Drinking Age Should Be Lowered To Eighteen
Words: 631 - Pages: 3.... would also aid in the prevention of alcohol-related accidents. They could enact a zero tolerance policy, which would punish anyone who is caught in the act of an alcohol-related crime on the first offense, such as drunk driving.
Raising the driving age to eighteen instead of sixteen could also reduce traffic accidents in general. I think that sixteen is too young to be given power over a weapon as deadly as an automobile. However, since the legal driving age is sixteen, perhaps lawmakers should enact training requirements that are stricter for new drivers. For example, they could require more driving time with a certified instruc .....

Gun Control
Words: 542 - Pages: 2.... right "to bear arms". Opponents of gun
control, including the National Rifle Association, better known as the NRA,
argue that the "right To bear arms" is guaranteed in the second amendment
of the Constitution of the United States of America and licensing
restrictions penalize law-abiding citizens while in no way preventing
criminal use of handguns. It is also argued that by making it difficult
for guns to be bought and registered for the American public there is a
threat to the personal safety of American families everywhere.
However controlling the sale and distribution of firearms is
necessary because of the homicide rate invol .....

Crime - A Game You Can’t Win
Words: 721 - Pages: 3.... (Swanson, 342). It can be argued that the “Three Strikes” law stops repeat violent offenders with the threat of longer sentences after each conviction. In agreement with the need for imposed jail terms, allowing three individual convictions to increase the sentence is a mockery of the judicial system. The “Three Strikes” law represents a faltering attempt at punishing violent criminals.
“We have increased the odds of incarceration,” said Dr. Morgan Reynolds, director of the National Center for Policy Analysis’ Criminal Justice Center. “Perpetrators know it is more costly to commit crime, and that acts as a deterrent .....

intentions of these invaders. These are they which are labeled, "Illegal
Aliens".
I know you're not laughing, because it's not funny. For example:
7-11? Once an American dream, before the Illegal Aliens came into the
picture! Conceive that you walk wearily into a 7-11, yearning for a large
Pepsi, filled with ice, and brimming with tiny bubbles popping at the
surface. . . But no!! the cashier can only say, "Thank you, come again" in
a bad accent. You've probably also taken an extensive trip once or twice
along a barren interstate. But before leaving, you want to make sure your
family doesn't starve on the journey. So you d .....

The legalization of medical marijuana would create a new job market for some Mainers. People who might not have had a job before can become a registered grower, and not only make money to support their family, but help the ill in the process. In later years, other states in the vicinity of Maine might legalize medical marijuana as well. Our advanced agricultural practice might monopolize their market and registered growers of Maine could offer their services to help farmers in other states.

therapeutically active substances known. Marijuana is often useful in the
treatment of cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and chronic
pain. For cancer patients, marijuana alleviates the nausea, vomiting, and loss
of appetite caused by chemotherapy treatment. It does the same for people with
AIDS. By reducing intraocular pressure, marijuana helps slow or halt the
gradual increasing eye pressure suffered by glaucoma patients. Marijuana reduces
the muscle pain and spastically caused by multiple sclerosis. It also helps some
patients control their bladders. With some epileptic pa .....

Heroin Abuse
Words: 768 - Pages: 3.... succeeds in achieving is turning the drug trade into an illegal, dark and murky black market affair.
We must now ask the question, are we going to stand staunch in policies which have proved to be unsuccessful or are we going to take a brave leap into a more hopeful future?
There is great fear reverberating through the community; fear of stepping into a more open and frightening, yet decidedly more promising way of tackling the issue. Reform does not mean, as opposers argue, condoning the use of drugs. It means accepting that drugs are part, admittedly an unfortunate part, of our society which will not simply ‘go away’.

Capital Punishment
Words: 2101 - Pages: 8.... they believed in the rule of "an eye for an eye." Similarly, the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, and Greeks all executed citizens for a variety of crimes. The most famous people to be executed are Socrates and Jesus. Only in England, during the reigns of King Canute (1016-1035) and William the Conqueror (1066-1087) was the death penalty not used, although the results of interrogation and torture were often fatal (Kronenwetter 12). Later, Britain reinstated the death penalty and brought it to its American colonies.
Although the death was widely accepted throughout the early United States, not everyone approved of it. In the late-eight .....

Crime And Gangs In America
Words: 600 - Pages: 3.... suggested they were genetically inferior. But American slaves were better mannered, more civil, and less inclined to commit a crime than their white owners. They were, on the whole, by most historical accounts, a very civil, obedient and law abiding people. They were better citizens than their educated, well-fed owners. Why? Some may say fear. Fear of Massah? Or maybe, the slave owners? Perhaps to a degree. Fear certainly is a motivator.
I do not think the average American criminal is much afraid of the law or society, today. Society is not their master. So I concede that fear will work, to a point. But only to a point and it reall .....
