Should Juveniles Be Waived To Adult Court
Words: 937 - Pages: 4.... not be considered an offense.
In the 1950’s and 60’s many laws were passed to protect the rights of children, in a court of law. The major decisions of this time were: Kent v. United States, In re Gault, and In re Winship. Since the time that these laws were enacted, the number of juveniles committing violent offenses has risen dramatically.
There are two distinct schools of thought in this argument: side A believes that a persons age should not prevent that person from feeling the full effect of the adult court system, while side B feels that you simply cannot apply the same rules to juvenile offenders that you do to adults. I will .....

Crime And The Death Penalty
Words: 534 - Pages: 2.... believe that it is totally barbaric and morally
wrong. Many people who are against capital punishment are only thinking of
the criminal and how cruel it is for them. But, shouldn’t we think of the
families that are broken apart now because of the merciless acts of these
criminals. Think of Susan Smith, how she knowingly drove her car off into
a lake with her two children strapped to the seats. Think of how they must
have felt as the cold water started to fill the cabin of the car, and then
ultimately drown them. Barbaric is exactly the word I would use to
describe her actions. But yet, the jury rejected the death penalty and
chose a lif .....

Outlaws In The Frontier
Words: 544 - Pages: 2.... Joaquin Murieta, and the Dalton gang. Equally famous were some of the lawmen who tried to rid the West of criminals Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and the infamous Judge Roy Bean.
The era of the American outlaw lasted about 100 years roughly from 1800 until 1900. There had been lawlessness during the colonial era. Frontiers have always attracted misfits, failures, and renegades who hope to profit by being beyond the reach of government. In the years just before the Revolutionary War, gangs of horse thieves in the back country of South Carolina were broken up by organized bands of farmers called Regulators.
As frontier settl .....

Police Blunders In The Manson Investigation
Words: 835 - Pages: 4.... told him about the scream, and requested
that he go see if anyone needed help. He drove around the area but saw nothing
unusual. Robert Bullington of the Bel Air Patrol was in his parked car when he
heard three gunshots spaced a few seconds apart. He immediately called in to
headquarters (the call logged in at 4:11 a.m.). Headquarters then called in to
LA
PD but nothing further was done. About four thirty paperboy Steve Shannon, who
hadn't heard anything the previous night, noticed what looked like a telephone
wire hanging over the front gate and a bug light on near the house. Mr. Kott
also noticed the wire when he went out .....

Drug Prohibition
Words: 4751 - Pages: 18.... the costs of the "War on Drugs," the most obvious is monetary cost. The direct cost of purchasing drugs for private use is $100 billion a year. The federal government spends at least $10 billion a year on drug enforcement programs and spends many billions more on drug-related crimes and punishment. The estimated cost to the United States for the "War on Drugs" is $200 billion a year or an outstanding $770 per person per year, and that figure does not include the money spent by state and local government in this "war" (Evans and Berent, eds. xvii).
The second cost of this "war" is something economists call opportunity costs. Here, we have tw .....

The Legalizing Of Marijuana
Words: 691 - Pages: 3.... marijuana can ease pain,
relieve nausea, and generally relax a person. Marijuana is cheap and easy to
produce, so if legalized, it would be plentiful and probably widely used. The
problem is that there are as many harmful effects from smoking marijuana as
there are benefits. It slows reflexes, dulls the brain, and sometimes causes
hallucinations and/or cancer. There's no mystery about why it is illegal in
most parts of the world… including the U.S.
There is a simple solution that is not being discussed by the hard-
headed bureaucracy. THC is easily removed from the plant and could be
administered as medicine in pill form. What a .....

Hammurabi's Laws
Words: 636 - Pages: 3.... of their culture.
Nowadays lying under oath is a crime and can be dealt with in many ways,
most times it just results in a fine. Law number six is if a man has stolen
goods, he shall be put to death, and if he gave any stolen goods to people,
they shall be put to death too. Today a robber would usually get a fine or
jail time, and same for the person who received the goods, but wouldn't
receive a death sentence in most cases. You can see how str ict they were
on robbery back then, and probably not many robberies occurred. There were
also laws that dealt with stealing ox, sheep, ass, pig, or ship that,
unlike the previous laws, wasn't puni .....

Date Rape
Words: 902 - Pages: 4.... force a woman
to have sex, or why would a woman doubt that it happened, or that she was
forced? Well, there are many reasons. A lot of these reasons having to do with
how American kids are raised. Boys are brought up thinking they are strong and
aggressive, while on the other hand, girls are brought up being passive and
"what you say goes" (Shuker-Haines and Stark 23) . This shouldn't be going on
in our society...not with the advancements we have made in our country.
It is sometimes said that the woman who was the victim of rape shared fault for
the rape for wearing a skirt too short, or maybe if she stops over at his house.
It should .....

Failure Of Gun Control Laws
Words: 1567 - Pages: 6.... it.
The second amendment to the Constitution of the United States makes firearm
ownership legal in this country. There were good reasons for this freedom,
reasons which persist today. Firearms in the new world were used initially
for hunting, and occasionally for self-defense. However, when the colonists
felt that the burden of British oppression was too much for them to bear,
they picked up their personal firearms and went to war. Standing against
the British armies, these rebels found themselves opposed by the greatest
military force in the world at that time. The 18th century witnessed the
height of the British Empire, but the rough band .....
