Ambiguity And Equivocation In Macbeth
Words: 1192 - Pages: 5.... power. Lady
Macbeth's statement to Macbeth that "When you durst do it, then you were a
man;" (I.vii.55) suggests that she and Macbeth have contemplated and
possibly committed murder for the sake of advancement before. Macbeth
provides further support for this in his reaction to the witches' prophecy
that he will be king. After Macbeth is made Thane of Cawdor, he realizes
that the witches were right, and immediately begins to ponder the other
part of their prophecy. "My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,"
(I.iii.153) he thinks, bringing murder to the front of his mind almost as
soon as the witches are proven right. Later in the pl .....

King Oedpius: Oedpius A Person Of Great Importance
Words: 1163 - Pages: 5.... man? Oedipus accuses Tiresias and Creon, two
innocent men, of conspiring to dethrone him and take over the country.
Would a "good" man do this, lacking any evidence but his own suspicions?
Would a "good" man wish his own brother-in-law dead when no one could even
testify to his guilt? Would a "good" man threaten a timid shepherd with
pain and death merely because he was hesitant to reveal the harsh realities
of Oedipus' life? Oedipus' tale of meeting Laius is another troubling
point. In Colonus he states in plain terms that King Laius would have
murdered him had he not killed Laius. In his initial speech to Jocasta on
Laius' death .....

The Preponderant Lysistrata
Words: 1195 - Pages: 5.... all men to unite them in peace to end the war. All of the Spartan and Athenian men do have one strong tie in common that is highly important to them in this time period. This commonality is their sexual relationship with their wives. Lysistrata knows how important sex is to the men of all city-states. Without the women, the men “walk around the city bent over like men lighting matches in a wind” (726, 1028-9). Lysistrata uses her knowledge to gain power over them by summoning all of the women together and calling for “a sex-strike against war” (701). This “sex-strike” puts the men in “a pretty high-strung condition” (727, 11 .....

Words: 1305 - Pages: 5.... narrative and surrealistic image, Thelma and Louise problematizes such oppositional readings as well as such familiar oppositions as masculine and feminine, positive and negative images of women, reinscription and subversion of patriarchal ideologies. The tension between the film’s uses of narrative and image works to interrogate and problematize both feminist and antifeminist assumptions about gender, power, and subjectivity.
In Alice Doesn’t Teresa de Lauretis claims that
Feminist film theory has gone well beyond the simple opposition of positive and negative images, and has indeed displaced the very terms of that oppositio .....

sees a play and the passion the actors had, after Hamlet's third soliloquy, in
Hamlet's fourth soliloquy, and in Hamlet's indecisive pursuit in avenging his
father's death.
First, Hamlet's flaw of irresolution is shown when he sees a play and
the passion one particular actor had. A group of players has arrived and Hamlet
arranges a personal viewing of The Murder of Gonzago with a small portion of his
own lines inserted. Hamlet then observes one portion of the play in which one
of the players put on a great display of emotion. Hamlet, besieged by guilt and
self-contempt, remarks in his second soliloquy .....

Macbeth: The Symbol Of Blood
Words: 879 - Pages: 4.... who been injured in a valiant battle for his country. In the next passage, in which the sergeant says "Which smok'd with bloody execution", he is referring to Macbeth's braveness in which his sword is covered in the hot blood of the enemy. After these few references to honour, the symbol of blood now changes to show a theme of treachery and treason. Lady Macbeth starts this off when she asks the spirits to "make thick my blood,". What she is saying by this, is that she wants to make herself insensitive and remorseless for the deeds which she is about to commit. Lady Macbeth knows that the evidence of blood is a treacherous symbol, and knows .....

Words: 753 - Pages: 3.... in order to get
into the Capulet household, who is hosting a ball. By doing so, they
easily manipulate the servant into letting both of them in. Before
entering, Romeo replies to Benvolio, “ I’ll go along, no such sight to be
shown, but to rejoice in spledor of mine own.” (I,iii, 105-106) It is
evident in the opening scenes that there is conflict between the households
of the Montagues and the Capulets, whom which Juliet belongs to. If
Benvolio did not suggest to Romeo to go to the ball, Romeo would have never
laid eyes on the beautiful Juliet and fallen in love with her. At the same
time, Juliet has also fallen in love with .....

Nell
Words: 644 - Pages: 3.... The expert psychologist in the movie believed that Nell was mentally
retarded and had made a small amount of intellectual development as a result of
being raised in seclusion. Fortunately, they were wrong. The speech that Nell
gave in the courtroom proved that she had developed intellectually. While the
language that she used was different, Nell still gave a good list of very
abstract ideas that someone who is mentally retarded could not possibly
comprehend. Nell understood why she was different saying that she was raised in
a small world and knew small things unlike the large things found in the city of
Charlotte, N.C. This proved t .....

Julius Caesar: The Corruption Of Power
Words: 869 - Pages: 4.... prevent Caesar from becoming a tyrant and
to show their anti-Caesar sentiments. Caesar put the two men “to silence”
or to death. This showed how he did not tolerate any nonsense. He did
not like opposition or anyone questioning him, even though Flavius and
Marullus had a right to express their beliefs. Caesar also presents his
despotic attitude, when Metellus Cimber begs him to reverse his brother’s
banishment. Caesar selfishly replied that this request “might fire the
blood of ordinary men…know, Caesar doth not wrong…”. He refers to himself
in the third person, and considered his status to be next to the gods. He
believe .....
