Could Gambling Save Science: Encouraging An Honest Consensus
Words: 16316 - Pages: 60.... of this paper is spent examining potential problems with
the proposed approach. After this examination, the idea still seems
plausible and worth further study.
INTRODUCTION
After reviewing the discrepancy between what we want from academic
institutions and what we get from current institutions, a market-based
alternative called "idea futures" is suggested. It is described through
both a set of specific scenarios and a set of detailed procedures. Over
thirty possible problems and objections are examined in detail. Finally, a
development strategy is outlined and the possible advantages are summarized.
THE PROBLEM

The Black Hole
Words: 1309 - Pages: 5.... hole. All black holes are
formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great,
massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind
together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all
the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it
first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the
star start to burn continuously. The Hydrogen gas is usually the first
type of gas consumed in a star and then other gas elements such as Carbon,
Oxygen, and Helium are consumed.
This chain reaction fuels the star for millions or billions of years .....

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (gad)
Words: 1033 - Pages: 4.... muscle tension, stomach pains, or headaches that tend to worsen when they face even mild stress (Harvard Health Letter, 1998)
In 1994, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) became an identifiable mental disorder with a DSM-IV diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria for GAD are:
A. Unrealistic or excessive anxiety and worry about life circumstances for a period greater than 6 months, during which this person has been bothered by these concerns for more days than not.
B. The person has difficulty controlling the anxiety and worrying.
C. The anxiety and worry are associated with at least 3 of the following symptoms:
1) Restlessness or .....

Give An Overview Of Life Through The Tertiary, In Relation T
Words: 1368 - Pages: 5.... of the deep sea and, later in the Cenozoic Era, in widespread glaciation. Paleogene mountain-building events in western North America foreshadowed Neogene uplifts of such ranges as the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains.
During the Neogene, the modern world took shape. The global ecosystems acquired their present configuration and prominent topographic features assumed the forms we are familiar with today.
No mass extinction marked the transition from the Paleogene to the Neogene. During the 24 million years of the Neogene, however, life ad Earth’s physical features have changed significantly. The most far-reaching biotic ch .....

Xenon
Words: 619 - Pages: 3.... elements in the crude krypton through a process called fractional
distillation. In fractional distillation, the process separates two elements
that have different boiling points. Basic-ally, when a sample is heated, the
faster element leaves first, leaving the second element behind. Krypton was
known to have a boiling point at a temperature that is lower than xenon. So the
scientists could predict that heating the mixture would leave krypton in the
container, while the faster boiling xenon leaving it. After the two scientists
separated krypton and xenon, they identified it as a new element through the
emission spectrum of the gas.

Nuclear Power And Its Uses
Words: 527 - Pages: 2.... Radioactive iodine is used both
in diagnosing and in treating diseases of the thyroid. Nuclear power is changing
the face of medicine with new cures and tests that will cure millions..
Nuclear power can be converted into strong and efficient nuclear energy and be
used for many purposes. Nuclear power reactors generates heat that is converted
into steam. The steam can be used directly for energy. This energy is used in
transportation. Most military subs are now ran by nuclear energy. The most used
purpose of nuclear energy can also be used to generate electric power for
example in a commercial nuclear power plant. Another way to produce nucl .....

Historic Model Of Science
Words: 673 - Pages: 3.... proclaimed as wrong. Once science became a part of life and began to prove and bluntly say things that the bible and religion could not come near to explaining, it became the basis for fact. The ‘heroic model’ could easily be blamed for the breakdown of the religious-infested societies that plagued the world.
This became very important to everyone involved, which proved to be more people than expected. The ‘heroic model’ was an opening for scientist and others to express their opinions without the fear of being ostracized and labeled as a blasphemer. These people were no longer look down upon as sinners, agains .....

Experiment To See If Soaking A Golf Ball Affects Its Distance

yards and was durable - until it got wet. Then it would split open. The
Gutta percha was introduced in 1850 and was made of a rubberlike sap from
the Malaysian sapdilla tree. The material was heated to soften it and then
hand-formed into a solid, one piece ball.Gutta percha was black, so the
early balls were painted white. Easier to make, less expensive, and more
durable, the gutta revolutionized golf. When golfers discovered that balls
and nicks flew longer and straighter then new ones, manufactures began to

Endocrine Disruption
Words: 2635 - Pages: 10.... different glands or organs work together in the production of certain hormones. Those produced in one location will almost always have an effect on many other areas of the body, not just the surrounding tissues.
An analogy that fits very well with the study of the endocrine system is that of a message in a bottle. We can think of the body as a river, and a specific hormone may be a bottle containing a message. The organs or glands mentioned above would manufacture the “bottles” (hormones) that would be released into the river (blood stream). If there were no receptor sites for the hormones in the body, then they would conti .....

Circulation Systems Over China
Words: 1879 - Pages: 7.... maritime air masses, along with the
seasonal shifts of the overhead sun. These changes in the pressure systems over
Asia generate the unique Asian monsoon circulation which prevails over China
throughout the year.
Surface Pressure Field and Winds: For any fluid to initiate movements, pressure
gradient must exists. Therefore, for a close understanding of the circulation
system that operates over China, we should start from discussing the seasonal
pressure distribution at sea-level over the Asia-Pacific region, which is the
driving force for the air movements in China. Most clearly to be seen, the
largest difference in the atmospheric press .....
