Chinook Salmon
Words: 601 - Pages: 3.... to our salmon populations. The dams block off
rivers, which block the salmon's path back to their breeding grounds. The
salmon go back to the same areas, just as their ancestors did, to lay their eggs.
The hydropower plant's turbines are also very dangerous to young salmon. Many
of them are killed by the giant turbines on their way back to the ocean.
Killing off many of the salmons new generation. Pollution is also a killer of
many Chinook salmon. Pollution caused by sewage, farming, grazing, logging and
mining find it's way into our waters. These harmful substances kill many
species of fish and other marine life. The Chinook salmo .....

Endosymbiosis
Words: 2101 - Pages: 8.... size and shape of an almond. These glands are located behind the upper eyelid at the outer corner of the eye. After passing over the eye, the liquid from the gland is drained into the nose through the tear duct at the inner corner of the eye.
Heavy laughter or crying causes muscles in the upper eyelid to squeeze the lachrymal gland. This produces tears that flow too fast to be drained away. The eyelashes catch many flying particles that otherwise would enter the eye. As further protection, the eyelids automatically close when an object suddenly moves close to the eye.
The eye is made of 3 coats, or tunics. The outermost coat consists .....

Causes Of Schizophrenia
Words: 959 - Pages: 4.... for such factors comes from every day experience: it is common to find families with several affected members. While such clustering'could also be due to shared non-inherited (environmental') factors, more convincing evidence has come from twin studies, as well as studies of ill individuals who were adopted away before the onset
of illness.
It is fair to say that even such studies do not suggest inherited
factors as the sole causes. A more reasonable explanation is that
there are individuals who have an inherited proneness to illness.
Such individuals may fall ill, if in addition, they are exposed to
noxious factors in the envir .....

Genetic Engineering. 2
Words: 2977 - Pages: 11.... specifically in the field of medicine. It will usher in a world where gene defects, bacterial disease, and even aging are a thing of the past. By understanding genetic engineering and its history, discovering its possibilities, and answering the moral and safety questions it brings forth, the blanket of fear covering this remarkable technical miracle can be lifted.
The first step to understanding genetic engineering, and embracing its possibilities for society, is to obtain a rough knowledge base of its history and method. The basis for altering the evolutionary process is dependent on the understanding of how individuals pass on charac .....

Solar Cells
Words: 1163 - Pages: 5.... electrons as there are protons, so, on the
whole, it is electrically neutral. The electrons have discrete kinetic energy
levels, which increase with the orbital radius. When atoms bond together to form
a solid, the electron energy levels merge into bands. In electrical conductors,
these bands are continuous but in insulators and semiconductors there is an
"energy gap", in which no electron orbits can exist, between the inner valence
band and outer conduction band [Book 1]. Valence electrons help to bind together
the atoms in a solid by orbiting 2 adjacent nucleii, while conduction electrons,
being less closely bound to the nucleii, are free .....

PCR And Its Use
Words: 773 - Pages: 3.... is how they go about doing this: They first get their small DNA sample.
Then they mix all the chemicals (this includes the primer, etc). Then they have
to run it through the PCR machine. Here is a (rather detailed) description of
the process: "The cycling protocol consisted of 25-30 cycles of three-
temperatures: strand denaturation at 95degC, primer annealing at 55degC, and
primer extension at 72deg C, typically 30 seconds, 30 seconds, and 60 seconds
for the DNA Thermal Cycler and 4 seconds, 10 seconds, and 60 seconds for the
Thermal Cycler 9600, respectively."
Basically, that means that they set it to certain temperatures, then .....

Air Pollution
Words: 788 - Pages: 3.... is the chief component of photochemical smog, which is a common form of . Fuel combustion for heating and cooling homes, offices, buildings, and factories contribute significantly to . Electric power plants that burn coal or oil in also releases pollutants into the atmosphere. The major pollutants from these source are nitrogen- oxides, sulfur-oxides, and carbon dioxide.
The rapid growth of population and industry, and the increased use of automobiles and airplanes has made a very serious and complicated problem. The air we know today and breathe has become so filled with pollutants that it can cause little health problem .....

Aedes Aegypti

The Aedes aegypti, with regard to both sexes, are generally similar in coloration
(Womack 1993). The female adult is noticed by it’s small dark figure that is colored by
white markings and banded legs. Its proboscis or snout is mostly black with regard to
the white palp tips (Russel 1996). The dorsal pattern of white scales on the scutum is in
the shape of a ‘lyre’ with two central based stripes that contrast with the dark scales
present on the insect (Womack 1993,
Russel 1996). Its wings are dark scaled and femur and hind legs are pale scaled for
about three-quarters, and dark scaled for about two-thirds (R .....

Effects Of Excessive Pesticide
Words: 5605 - Pages: 21.... can pose risks to human health and the environment if not properly used.
Pest problems are not new; in fact, they have been around as long as agriculture itself. But the pest pressure faced by farmers is now as great as it ever was: the world's fast-growing human population needs to be fed from an always shrinking base of agricultural land, and the substantial damage that can be inflicted by pests (e.g. insects, diseases, weeds, rodents, birds) on crops is the margin between a good harvest and a bad one. Pests can reduce the quality of a harvest as well as its quantity. Since the quality of food is increasingly important to consumers, a .....

Abortions
Words: 711 - Pages: 3.... it don’t have easy solutions. On the other hand, the thought of killing a little baby is disgusting and unthinkable.
This is where I stand, and the only solution I can come up with is the total ban of altogether. This task should not be a hard one, but it might take some time. My plan calls for the closing and the illegalizing of abortion clinics, and the prosecution of people who perform these deeds.
As with any big descion we must consider the opposing views. One reason that the debate on what we should do about doesn’t go anywhere, is because each side focuses on a different topic. We make no progress because we are not talki .....
