Fertilizers
Words: 580 - Pages: 3.... potassium or any other element necessary in the aid of plant growth. If one accidently digests inorganic fertilizer, he or she must see a doctor as soon as possible. One can get red eyes, itchiness, and or stomach problems.
During World War 2, the government built many factories to absorb nitrogen gas from the air and to use them in explosives. Soon after the war, these factories were used to absorb nitrogen gas and to be used as a fertilizer. This method was inexpensive and farmers were now actually making a profit. By 1985, farmers used approximately eleven million tons of nitrogen a year. This is eight times more than what farm .....

Mitochondria 2
Words: 752 - Pages: 3.... inner membrane of the mitochondria is folded into shelf like structures called cristae. The cristae does not even allow the passage of small ions and so it maintains a closed space within the cell. The many infoldings of the cristae are responsible for providing the mitochondrion with a large surface area which enhances the productivity of respiration.
The inner membrane and outer membrane effectively divide the mitochondria into two internal compartments. The space located between the outer and inner mitochondrial membrane is called the intermembrane space. The space enclosed by the inner membrane is called the mitochondrial matri .....

Geothermal Energy 2
Words: 827 - Pages: 4.... the use of geothermal pumps to heat and cool buildings, reducing the need for natural gas and other nonrenewable resources). It is unfortunate that only a small part of our geothermal resources are being used today.
Hot water, at temperatures between 300 and 700 degrees Fahrenheit, is brought from an underground reservoir to the surface and is converted to steam by using changes in pressure. The steam and liquid are separated, with the steam turning turbines (generating electricity) and the water is injected back into the reservoir to maintain the chamber's pressure.
Sometimes the hot water is used directly for home, and sometimes gr .....

The Creation Of The Universe
Words: 1818 - Pages: 7.... it is difficult to fathom that
they are all the same divine being. It is also plausible that we just have a
desire to quench the thirst for knowledge that lies deep within ourselves. As
for myself, I cannot believe in a being which created a universe and a multitude
of worlds in a rather short period of time then deigns to lower itself into
becoming a puppet-master and "pulling the strings" of the Earth and all of the
people therein.
Since this paper touches upon many scientific terms, I feel that in
order for the reader to correctly grasp the content I must first define three
words: Theory, Law, and Hypothesis. The definitions .....

Cystic Fibrosis
Words: 383 - Pages: 2.... Research into the cause of reads like a detective story. One clue is that patients have excess amounts of sodium and chloride in their sweat making it vey salty . At the University of North Carolina researchers found that salt imbalance caues thick mucus to accumulate in the patients lungd. High level of salt in lung cells draw water out of the mucus causing it to thicken. The level of salt in a cell is determained by the movement of ions across the cell membrane.Ions are carried across call memebranes by protein channels embedded in the cell membrane. Since the stucture and functions of proteins are determained by genes problems with ion .....

Oxygen
Words: 752 - Pages: 3.... is used to make a
mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen called synthesis gas, used for the
synthesis of methanol and ammonia. High-purity oxygen is used also in the metal-
fabrication industries; in liquid form it is of great importance as a propellant
for guided missiles and rockets2.
I have chosen the element "Oxygen" because without Oxygen, human beings
would not be able to live. Oxygen is probably the single most important element
in the world as we know it. With out Oxygen we would not breath, have water, eat
plants.
Oxygen's Electron configuration is 1S2 + 2S2 + 2P4, it's electron dot
symbol is: .
Gaseous oxygen can .....

Radon
Words: 1533 - Pages: 6.... This is
the primary source of elevated radon levels in buildings.(5) Outdoor air
contains radon, but it is in extremely low concentrations therefore it is not a
health hazard. Some wells contain water that has radon dissolved in it. This
can be a hazard if the water is agitated or heated, allowing the gas to escape
and elevate the levels that are in the building.(6)
Health Risk
The Surgeon General's office reports that indoor radon gas is a national
health problem. This gas causes thousands of deaths every year.(7) These
deaths are a result of lung cancer, which is caused by the radioactive particles
that make up the gas.(8) The lik .....

Essay On Evolution
Words: 913 - Pages: 4.... small, its
gene pool may not be accurately represented in the next generation due to
sampling error. Genetic drift usually occurs in small populations that contain
less than 100 individuals, but in large populations drift may have no
significant effect on the population. Another mechanism is gene flow which is
when a population may gain or lose alleles by the migration of fertile
individuals between populations. This may cause the allele frequencies in a gene
pool to change and allow the organism to evolve. The most obvious mechanism
would have to be mutation that arises in the gene pool of a population or
individual. It is also the origin .....

Artificial Insemination
Words: 636 - Pages: 3.... tubes along with spermatozoa, thus allowing for normal fertilization.
Many times anonomus donors are used. Donors can be matched by factors such as race, color of eyes, hair and other physical characteristics, and are screened for conditions such as AIDS, gonorrhea and other STDS. Even though freezing sperm doesn't seem to affect a pregnancy, it reduces the sperm's movement and influences the success rate of . About 75 to 85 percent of women inseminated with fresh donor semen will get pregnant--especially if the procedure is repeated over several months. Unfortunately, freezing the sperm decreases the chances of success by 10 to 15 perce .....

Dinosaurs
Words: 714 - Pages: 3.... size, and they
were adapted for diverse habitats. Their means of survival can only be
identified from their fossil remains, and some identifications are in dispute.
They ranged in weight from 4 to 6 lb., in the case of the compsognathus, and up
to 160,000 lb., in the case of the brachiosaurus. Most dinosaurs were large,
weighing more than 1,100 lb., and few weighed less than 100 lb. Most were
herbivores, but some saurischians were carnivorous. The majority were four-
footed but some ornithischians and all carnivores walked on their hind legs.
Always classified as reptiles, dinosaurs have traditionally been assumed
to have been reptili .....
